Joaquin Phoenix Investigates a Murder in Final Eddington Trailer

A24 has released the final trailer for Eddington, a new Western black comedy from Ari Aster.

In May of 2020, a disagreement between the local sheriff and mayor in Eddington, New Mexico, led to a tense situation that caused residents to take sides. This dispute was similar to lighting a fuse on a keg of gunpowder.

What happens in the Eddington trailer?

In the opening scene of Eddington, Sheriff Joe Cross (Joaquin Phoenix) delves into an investigation of a murder on tribal territory. The sheriff, who intends to challenge Ted Garcia (Pedro Pascal) for the mayor’s position, is met with skepticism by Garcia. “How can you manage your own office, yet run mine? These are your streets that need protection,” Garcia says, as clips of Cross struggling to maintain order during a protest ensue. The rest of the trailer portrays a turbulent environment filled with gunfire, flames, and disgruntled citizens, hinting at widespread paranoia and political unrest.

In addition to Phoenix and Pascal, the cast of Eddington features Luke Grimes playing the role of Officer Guy, Deirdre O’Connell portraying Dawn, Michael Ward taking on the character of Michael, Amélie Hoeferle as Sarah, Clifton Collins Jr. as Lodge, William Belleau in the part of Officer Butterfly Jimenez, Austin Butler appearing as Vernon Jefferson Peak, and Emma Stone bringing Louise Cross to life.

As I, Aster, take the helm in creating Eddington, my fourth cinematic venture with A24, stepping up as writer, director, and producer after Hereditary, Midsommar, and more recently, Beau Is Afraid. While the latter didn’t quite strike a chord at the box office, Hereditary continues to stand tall among A24’s most profitable films worldwide, and Midsommar netted an impressive $48 million on a budget of just $9 million. Lars Knudsen and Ann Ruark join me as fellow producers in this exciting journey.

At the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, Eddington made its debut and contended for the Palme d’Or. So far, the early critics’ opinions have varied significantly. The movie will hit theaters on July 18, 2025.
