Joaquin Phoenix suggested to Lady Gaga that she should sing in a less polished manner, but during a Joker 2 press event (as reported by People), Gaga countered with her own preference – live performances. Eventually, after discussing it back and forth, they both agreed that live singing was the best choice.

In his words, Phoenix emphasized that not only did we perform live during recording, but every single element you hear in the final product was also recorded live. This means we didn’t sing to pre-existing tracks or a click track. Instead, we collaborated with a pianist on location, so each take offered a unique interpretation of the song, which made the process exhilarating and generated an essential energy.
