Joaquin Phoenix Abruptly Leaves Todd Haynes’ Romance Movie, No Plans to Recast

As a long-time fan of Joaquin Phoenix‘s exceptional acting prowess and Todd Haynes’ thought-provoking films, I find myself at a crossroads with this latest development. The news of Phoenix’s sudden exit from Haynes’ upcoming romantic drama has left me feeling a tad disheartened, like a die-hard fan watching their favorite team forfeit in the final moments of the Super Bowl.

Joaquin Phoenix has abruptly exited Todd Haynes’ new movie.

In September 2023, Haynes announced his plans for a film with adult content, which narrates a romantic tale between two male characters during the 1930s. Phoenix was chosen to portray one of these characters, while Danny Ramirez from Captain America: Brave New World was selected for the other role in July 2024.

During filming in Guadalajara, as reported by Deadline, Phoenix unexpectedly departed from the set around two weeks back.

Haynes’ romance movie is reportedly dead following Joaquin Phoenix’s departure

According to an article by Deadline, the movie cannot proceed without Joaquin Phoenix, who won an Oscar for his portrayal of The Joker. There are no plans to replace him. Crew members are owed money and Phoenix left the set before Comic-Con. It seems Ramirez went to San Diego Comic-Con uncertain if production would continue.

At present, it remains unclear as to what factors led Phoenix to withdraw from the movie production handled by Christine Vachon and Pam Koffler.

Todd Haynes is recognized for creating movies such as Safe (1995), Velvet Goldmine (1998), Far from Heaven (2002), I’m Not There (2007), Carol (2015), Wonderstruck (2017), Dark Waters (2019), The Velvet Underground (2021), and the latest, May December (2023). Recently, he was also chosen to write and direct an HBO limited series titled Trust, featuring Kate Winslet.

In the meantime, Phoenix bagged the Academy Award for Best Actor due to his outstanding portrayal of Arthur Fleck in the 2019 movie Joker. He’s set to reappear as the character in the forthcoming Todd Phillips-directed spinoff, titled Joker: Madness Twofold, sharing the screen with Lady Gaga. The DC production is slated for a U.S. cinema release on October 4, 2024.

Afterward, it’s been announced that Phoenix will feature in Ari Aster’s upcoming film titled Eddington. This movie also includes Pedro Pascal, Emma Stone, Austin Butler, Luke Grimes, and others on its star-studded cast. However, the exact release date of Eddington remains undisclosed by A24 as of now.
