Jennifer Lee Stepping Down as Disney Animation CCO, Will Direct Frozen 3 & 4

As a long-time Disney enthusiast and fan of the Frozen franchise, I couldn’t be more thrilled to hear that Jennifer Lee is returning to direct both Frozen 3 and Frozen 4! With her extensive experience as co-director of the first two films and her impressive role as the CCO at Walt Disney Animation Studios, it’s safe to say that we’re in for a magical ride.

Jennifer Lee, in an official statement, confirmed her departure from the position of Chief Creative Officer at Walt Disney Animation Studios. Instead, she will focus on filmmaking and is set to direct not only Frozen 3 but also a subsequent film, referred to as Frozen 4.

Speaking recently, Lee declared her intention to rejoin the Frozen franchise, this time collaborating with Marc Smith as they take on the task of directing the next pair of films in the series.

Lee announced that he would be devoting himself fully to filmmaking again, working alongside Marc Smith on both Frozen 3 and Frozen 4. He confessed that he was immediately captivated when Marc first introduced this new journey for the gang, and he’s been impressed by the remarkable story development since then. As a studio, they are relatively unfamiliar with musical sequels, but this will be their debut in telling a story across two films simultaneously. Lee is looking forward to the challenge and is extremely thankful for the chance to get back into filmmaking, and he can’t imagine a better way to do so than by reuniting with the Frozen family.

Lee served as a joint director for both Frozen and Frozen 2. She assumed the role of Chief Creative Officer (CCO) at Walt Disney Animation Studios in 2018 following John Lasseter’s departure from the company. Moreover, she penned the screenplay for Disney’s 2023 animated film Wish. Later on, it was announced that Jared Bush would succeed Lee as CCO.

What do we know about Frozen 3?

At present, we’re still in the dark regarding the storyline or specifics for the third installment of the popular Disney series. However, Disney has announced that the movie won’t be released in 2026 as initially planned but will instead debut a year later, in 2027. As for Frozen IV, no official details have been shared so far.

In Frozen II, we saw the return of actors like Kristen Bell (from The Good Place), Idina Menzel, and Josh Gad (from Murder on the Orient Express). Newcomers Sterling K. Brown (known for This is Us) and Evan Rachel Wood (Westworld) also joined the cast. Directed by Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck, it hit theaters in 2019 and earned a staggering $1.453 billion at the box office.
