As a seasoned gamer of the silver screen, I must confess that the news about Jenna Ortega auditioning for Denis Villeneuve’s Dune left me starstruck! Having followed her career since the early days of Jane The Virgin, it’s fascinating to imagine the alternate universe where she donned the role of Chani instead of Zendaya.
Although numerous fans of Jenna Ortega are anxiously anticipating her role in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, it’s interesting to note that she might have starred in another major franchise under the direction of Denis Villeneuve – Dune. The actress who rose to fame by portraying the main character in Netflix’s Wednesday series hinted that she could have played Chani instead of Zendaya in the film.
Jenna Ortega says she auditioned for Denis Villeneuve’s Dune
In my fervent admiration, I can’t help but express that Denis Villeneuve’s Dune films have struck gold, both critically and commercially, with their awe-inspiring visuals, stellar ensemble cast, and universally acclaimed narrative. Among the illustrious acting troupe, Timothee Chalamet and Zendaya truly dazzled as Paul Atreides and Chani respectively. However, in an alternate reality, Ortega might have stepped into Zendaya’s shoes for the role.
In an interview with BuzzFeed Celeb’s Puppy, she shared that about six years back, she tried out for the role in Dune. Although she can’t recall exactly which character it was, she speculates it might have been Chani. Put simply, the Scream VI actor hinted that she auditioned for a part in Dune around six years ago, and if she got it, she may have played Chani.
When I turned fifteen, I tried out for the role in Dune. My enthusiasm for that movie and its series was immense, and I was thrilled about the audition, given my admiration for Denis Villeneuve as a director. It’s believed it was for the character of Chani, although they didn’t reveal that at the time. Everything surrounding the audition was hush-hush.
Although Ortega wasn’t cast as a lead in Dune or its potential follow-ups, she has been occupied with various franchise productions instead. In the time to come, viewers will appreciate her acting in Wednesday Season 2, Klara and the Sun, Death of a Unicorn, and additional projects. However, prior to these, she’ll make a comeback on the big screen in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, scheduled for September 6.
