Speaking to Filmfare, Priyamani – who acted alongside Shah Rukh Khan in Jawan – talked about the distressing online harassment she experienced following her 2017 interfaith marriage with Mustafa Raj. In her interview, she disclosed that the harsh comments and rumors about her wedding had a significant impact on her mental wellbeing. Furthermore, she mentioned that some trolls even made insensitive remarks concerning their potential offspring and their future together.
In the course of the interview, Priyamani shared that she declared her engagement as a means to share the happy event with individuals she felt genuinely cared about her. Yet, rather than encouragement, she encountered an unforeseen wave of criticism, with allegations of ‘love jihad’ being hurled at her.
In a puzzling turn of events, unjustified hostility began flooding in, and false claims of ‘love jihad’ were swiftly made. They even went so far as to assert that if we were to have children in the future, they would become members of ISIS, Priyamani stated.
Priyamani, being part of the film industry, understood people might share their views about her. Yet, she was puzzled as to why strangers would criticize someone who had no connection to it and was unknown to them. Initially, the criticism affected her for a few days due to the influx of messages she received. Interestingly, she noted that most comments on her posts involving her husband often revolved around their religion or caste.
For approximately two to three days, the constant influx of messages left me feeling quite drained. Even today, whenever I share anything with him, it seems that nine times out of ten, the responses revolve around our religious or social backgrounds, as stated by the actress known as Jawan.
In 2016, Priyamani and Mustafa Raj became engaged, and they married in Bengaluru a year later in 2017. On the career side of things, she recently collaborated with Kunchacko Boban in the Malayalam thriller “Officer on Duty.” Coming up, she will be featured in “Jana Nayagan,” alongside Thalapathy Vijay, Bobby Deol, and Pooja Hegde in the main roles.
