Jason Momoa Fights Colonizers in Chief of War Trailer

Apple TV+ has unveiled the formal trailer for their upcoming historical epic, “Chief of War,” featuring Jason Momoa in the lead role. Momoa is well-versed in this genre, having previously starred in Discovery Channel’s Frontier series. The series will become available for streaming on August 1, 2025.

The narrative unfolds the extraordinary and unparalleled account of Hawaii’s unification and colonization around the 18th century turn. This tale is narrated from an indigenous point of view, with “Chief of War” being a deeply personal endeavor for creators Jason Momoa and Thomas Pa’a Sibbett, both of whom have native Hawaiian ancestry.

What happens in the Chief of War trailer?

The video presents Jason Momoa as Kaʻiana, a Native Hawaiian warrior, and the story unfolds with him leading his tribe in resistance against foreign colonizers. The conflict between the four main kingdoms of the Hawaiian Islands is also depicted, offering a sneak peek into some of the show’s thrilling battle scenes. In order to successfully defend against outside intruders, Kaʻiana must discover a means to bring the people together. The diverse cast is predominantly Polynesian, with stars such as Luciane Buchanan, Temuera Morrison, Te Ao o Hinepehinga, Cliff Curtis, Kaina Makua (a newcomer), Moses Goods, Siua Ikale’o, Brandon Finn, James Udom, Mainei Kinimaka, Te Kohe Tuhaka, and Benjamin Hoetjes.

This show, titled “Chief of War,” is jointly written and overseen by Jason Momoa and Thomas Pa’a Sibbett, with Doug Jung appointed as the lead producer. The series narrates the unification and colonization of Hawaii from an indigenous perspective. Doug Jung, Francis Lawrence, Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, Erik Holmberg, and Justin Chon serve as executive producers, with the latter also directing the first two episodes. The production is handled by Endeavor Content and Chernin Entertainment.
