As I, Jason Momoa, excitedly confirm it myself, I’m back for another round in the Dune universe! Just recently, I sat down with Craig Melvin on the TODAY show. You might remember me as the swordmaster Duncan Idaho from last year’s Dune. Now, I’m eagerly preparing to reprise my role in Dune: Messiah.
In the initial Dune movie, Jason Momoa’s character Duncan Idaho perishes and was absent from Dune: Part Two in 2024. Melvin clarified that according to Frank Herbert’s six-part Dune novel series published between 1965 and 1985, Duncan is slated for a resurrection as a clone. Momoa hinted, “I can’t say if I might get into trouble or not, but it’s like Game of Thrones, you understand? If you didn’t read the books, it’s not my fault, right? Yes, there will be…I’ll be back. I’m making a comeback. You heard it here first, alright?” Later, he joked, “I got myself into trouble!
In an interview with Deadline last October, director Denis Villeneuve hinted at the return of the main cast consisting of Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Florence Pugh, and Anya Taylor-Joy. He stated that they will indeed be back because they are part of the primary group when the events occur. Furthermore, he suggested that there would be more unusual elements or “worms.” He went on to say that the third movie will offer a fresh take, as it unfolds 12 years after the ending of Part Two, and the characters’ journey and tale will be distinct from what we’ve seen before. Villeneuve emphasized that although it is set in the same world, this film will present new situations and circumstances.
Dune: Messiah is expected to release in 2026.
