Jason Bourne Reboot Possible as Universal Loses Rights to Matt Damon Movie Franchise

For approximately 20 years, Universal Pictures has been in charge of the Jason Bourne film series, which began with The Bourne Identity in 2002 featuring Matt Damon. However, now, the rights to this movie franchise no longer belong to Universal. Instead, on behalf of Robert Ludlum’s estate, WME is actively seeking to sell the rights to the Jason Bourne franchise, as well as other works by the late author.

Which studios could potentially acquire the Jason Bourne reboot?

It seems that Skydance, Apple Studios, and Netflix are all considering purchasing the rights to the Jason Bourne series, as they’ve reportedly held discussions with the Robert Ludlum estate. At this point, it’s not known if any of these studios have made an offer yet, but there’s a chance that Universal Pictures could put forth a strong bid and regain control of the franchise.

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the aim is to revive the Jason Bourne series, making the renowned secret agent more frequently appear in films. This decision comes after seven years since Matt Damon last portrayed the character in the 2016 film “Jason Bourne,” which was one of the highest-grossing movies in the franchise with a box office revenue of $415 million worldwide. However, the 2016 movie was the lowest-rated installment, earning just a Tomatometer score of 55% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Jason Bourne series made a big impact in cinemas as early as 2002 with Doug Liman’s The Bourne Identity, a film about an amnesiac man piecing together his life while employing extraordinary combat skills to uncover a CIA plot. Its blend of critical and box office success led to four more sequels and a spin-off titled The Bourne Legacy starring Jeremy Renner.
