Janelle Monáe has been cast in Never Saw Me Coming for Universal Pictures.
2024 saw the release of a thrilling movie adaption titled “Never Saw Me Coming,” based on Tanya Smith’s gripping memoir novel of the same name. In this exhilarating tale, I, Tanya Smith, recount my extraordinary journey where I outwitted the FBI and the entire banking system to walk away with a staggering $40 million!
Beyond acting in the movie, Monáe is additionally involved in its production via her Wondaland Pictures studio, as reported by Deadline. Meanwhile, Smith takes on the role of executive producer.
What is Never Saw Me Coming about?
The book “Never Saw Me Coming” tells the captivating and deeply personal tale of Tanya Smith. She recounts her transformation from a curious young girl with a passion for technology into a cunning and tech-skilled individual. It all began with an innocent fascination for acquiring phone numbers, including Michael Jackson’s, as well as other celebrities. However, her activities escalated to successfully transferring $5,000 into her grandmother’s bank account without permission. By the age of 18, this daredevil had amassed millions in cash through her daring actions.
In a turn of events, the FBI is relentlessly pursuing her, bringing her in for an interrogation with demands to disclose her employers. However, they insensitively stated that such crimes were beyond the intellect of Black individuals, a comment that deeply offended her. Determined to prove them wrong, she managed to pilfer $40 million, along with diamonds, gold bars, and various other valuable commodities over time. Her newfound wealth drew unwanted attention, even from those who attempted to take her life.
The authorities continued their pursuit, eventually labeling Smith as one of the most significant dangers to the entire U.S. banking system. She was sentenced to a lengthy imprisonment – the longest ever given for a white-collar crime – and was eventually freed by presenting an exceptional defense on her own behalf.
A director is not yet attached to the project, and no release date has been set.
Beyond her thriving music endeavors, Monáe has also appeared in films like Moonlight (2016), Hidden Figures (2016), Welcome to Marwen (2018), Harriet (2019), Antebellum (2020), and Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (2022), along with several other movies.
