James McAvoy & Speak No Evil Director Explain Major Change in Their Remake

As a huge fan of psychological thrillers and James McAvoy’s acting, I am beyond excited for the upcoming film “Speak No Evil.” McAvoy’s recent interview with Total Film only adds to my anticipation, as he shares insight into the film’s respectful adaptation from the original Danish version.

Get ready for a nightmarish holiday in “Speak No Evil.” This forthcoming psychological thriller is an English adaptation of the 2022 Danish production helmed by Christian Tafdrup. Star James McAvoy emphasized that great care was taken to preserve the essence of the original, yet one significant alteration was implemented.

McAvoy explained in an interview with Total Film that Christian Tafdrup strongly advocated the boundaries of people’s acceptance, bordering on being symbolic. Our movie is a faithful adaptation of the original, yet brings something unique to the table.

In simpler terms, the director of the remake, James Watkins, reduced the physical harm inflicted on children from the original version and instead focused more on the mental aspects.

I’ve come to appreciate subtler terrors since becoming a parent, and our movie steers clear of graphic gore. It’s a psychological thriller with a chilling concept at its core, offering scares that originate from the mind rather than relying on shocking visuals alone.

What to Expect in Speak No Evil?

A tranquil countryside getaway with a friendly British family turns into a horrifying psychological maze for an American family in Universal Pictures’ description.

In a simpler version: Mackenzie Davis and Scoot McNairy portray Louise and Ben Dalton, an American couple, while Alix West Lefler takes on the role of their 11-year-old daughter in Speak No Evil. The British family is made up of McAvoy as Paddy, Aisling Franciosi as Ciara, and Dan Hough, who plays their silent son Ant.

In his role as writer and director, Watkins brings Speak No Evil to life, a film adapted from the Danish screenplay penned by Christian and Mads Tafdrup. Jason Blum and Paul Ritchie serve as its producers.

Speak No Evil hits theaters on September 13, 2024.
