James Gunn Talks Key Difference Between How DCU & MCU Announce Projects

As a die-hard comic book fan who has been following both the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) since their inceptions, I can’t help but feel a sense of intrigue about the upcoming changes under James Gunn‘s leadership for the DCEU. Unlike Kevin Feige at Marvel, who often announces a slew of future projects even before they’ve been fully scripted, Gunn insists on having a finished script before greenlighting a project.

James Gunn explains a significant difference in the rollout strategy for the DC Universe (DCU) compared to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

Next month, the initial launch of Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe (DCU) is set to debut, starting with an animated series titled Creature Commandos. Additionally, several other DCU projects have been disclosed; however, specific release dates for most of these are yet to be determined.

Regarding scheduling, Gunn was questioned whether DC Studios might adopt a plan like Kevin Feige at Marvel Studios, or if Gunn himself prefers to simply announce a film is in production once it begins.

Gunn explained, “It won’t resemble Marvel that much as we don’t move forward with anything until we have a completed script first.

On numerous occasions, Feige has unveiled extensive lineups of upcoming MCU productions during or for events. This roadmap offers fans a glimpse into future movies and series, but it’s important to note that sometimes projects get postponed or even scrapped years after their initial announcements; take the example of Mahershala Ali being cast as Blade in 2019 at San Diego Comic-Con. However, as of now, there’s no confirmed release date for the Blade movie.

What does the future hold for the DCU?

On December 5, 2024, the initial two episodes of Creature Commandos will make their debut on Max. Meanwhile, Gunn’s Superman film is slated for release on July 11, 2025. Lastly, Craig Gillespie’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is set to premiere on June 26, 2026.

The second season of “Peacemaker” is projected to debut in August 2025, and it looks like “Lanterns” could also make their appearance around the same period, according to Gunn’s latest statement, with “Supergirl” set to follow.

Currently undated upcoming projects from DC Universe besides those already released involve “The Authority”, “The Brave and the Bold”, “Swamp Thing”, “Teen Titans”, “Waller”, “Paradise Lost”, “Booster Gold”, and further titles.
