James Gunn Shares Lanterns Release Date Information, Discusses ‘Adult’ and ‘Grounded’ Approach

As a longtime DC comics fan who has been following the development of the Green Lantern series since I was a kid, I can hardly contain my excitement for James Gunn‘s upcoming TV show, “Lanterns.” Having already proven his knack for delivering high-quality storytelling in films like The Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy, I have no doubt that he will bring the same level of excellence to this series.


James Gunn offers hints about the upcoming Lanterns TV show, sharing insights into its possible release timeline too.

Ever since Gunn became joint CEO of DC Studios with Peter Safran, this acclaimed director – recognized for his work on The Suicide Squad and the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy – has been actively developing multiple ventures aimed at introducing the DC Universe (DCU).

The DC Universe officially kicks off on December 5 with the debut of Creature Commandos, and during this announcement, Gunn also shared some insights into a potential launch date for Lanterns.

According to Gunn, it’s actually the Creature Commandos, Superman, Peacemaker, the Lanterns, and Supergirl that he mentioned [to IGN]. There are also a few surprises in store for them.

He mentioned that the premiere date for Lanterns aligns with Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, set to be released in theaters on June 26, 2026. Moreover, the DC Studios co-CEO shared they’re preparing to commence production on the Green Lantern TV series.

Although specifics regarding the forthcoming series are still kept secret, Gunn hinted at the unique direction they adopted for the Lanterns and expressed that the selected actors harmoniously match the narrative’s requirements.

Chris [Mundy], Tom [King], and Damon [Lindelof] crafted an exceptional series, one that’s truly captivating. I can hardly wait for audiences to experience it. It’s incredibly realistic, believable, and authentic – things you wouldn’t expect from a Green Lanterns TV show. Moreover, it’s deeply human, mature, and delightful. The story they penned was tailored to suit the actors of their chosen age range, which is who they decided to cast. I wholeheartedly support their decision, and I’m genuinely fond of them,” Gunn shared with IGN.

He expressed, “I’m truly looking forward for everyone to witness the brilliant work of those individuals. However, everything is ultimately in support of the narrative. The story is paramount. The scripts are always priority. We wouldn’t be producing this series if Chris and his team hadn’t delivered outstanding, captivating scripts.

In this production, Aaron Pierre takes on the role of John Stewart, while Hal Jordan will be portrayed by Kyle Chandler. Sheriff Kerry is played by Kelly Macdonald, William Macon by Garret Dillahunt, and Zoe by Poorna Jagannathan.

The storyline focuses on two space policemen, John Stewart and Hal Jordan (a renowned Green Lantern), who find themselves entangled in a mysterious crime taking place in the heart of America while investigating a homicide. This is a brief summary of the plot.
