As a seasoned gamer of DC Universe lore and a long-time fan of Superman, the news about the upcoming trailer for the new movie has me buzzing with anticipation! Having grown up watching multiple iterations of Kal-El’s origin story, I must admit that I am intrigued by James Gunn‘s decision to skip the usual backstory and instead jump right into the action.
DC University’s upcoming Superman film is set to unveil its initial trailer soon, offering viewers a sneak peek into the movie’s narrative. However, prior to the trailer release, some storyline details have been disclosed by James Gunn regarding characters like Clark Kent, Lois Lane, and Lex Luthor. He has clarified the starting point of the film and whether it revisits another Kal-El origin tale.
Lex Luthor hates Superman from the start, says James Gunn
Multiple adaptations have shown Superman’s origin tale, which means viewers may not witness the demise of Krypton or Clark’s youth in the DC Universe. In a manner similar to Matt Reeves’ Batman film skipping ahead to year two, James Gunn’s Superman project will plunge us right into the midst of the action.
In conversation with ComicBook, Gunn disclosed that at the start of the film, we find out where Superman stands in his personal journey.
Absolutely, the film immersed us right into the thick of things since the start. Things in this movie, having worked on it for over a year, seem commonplace to me now. Yet, when I reflect upon them, I realize how unique they actually are.
He continued, revealing key details about Superman, Lois, and Lex Luthor:
Our story dives straight into the thick of things; Superman is already established, and Lois Lane and Clark Kent are acquainted. Lex Luthor harbors intense disdain for Superman since the get-go, although they haven’t crossed paths personally yet. The narrative unfolds swiftly and covers a brief timeframe.
Instead of another retelling of Superman’s origins, James Gunn’s approach will showcase a matured Superman, fully prepared to confront any challenges Lex Luthor may bring his way.
The movie is set to premiere in theaters on July 11, 2025. David Corenswet portrays Clark Kent / Superman in this production, with Rachel Brosnahan playing his romantic interest Lois Lane. Nicholas Hoult takes on the role of the main antagonist Lex Luthor. Additionally, Edi Gathegi plays Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion is Guy Gardner / Green Lantern, Isabela Merced depicts Hawkgirl, and Frank Grillo portrays Rick Flag Sr., among others.
