James Gunn Reveals His Reaction to The Batman 2 Script

James Gunn recently shared his thoughts about Matt Reeves and Mattson Tomlin’s script for “The Batman 2” in a recent conversation. Back in June 2025, Matt Reeves took to social media to announce that the script for “The Batman: The Sequel” was already complete.

In March 2022, the release of “Batman” was met with immense praise from both critics and audiences, sparking the development of a connected universe dubbed by its creators as the “Batman Epic Crime Saga.

James Gunn calls The Batman 2 script “great”

James Gunn was questioned by Deadline at the Superman world premiere on Monday if he had reviewed Matt Reeves’ script, and whether Bat-Mite was included in it. Laughing about the mention of Bat-Mite, Gunn shared his thoughts on Reeves and Tomlin’s screenplay, calling it “excellent.

Bat-Mite is a lesser-known figure hailing from the DC Comics universe, frequently viewed as more of an annoyance than a true villain. Despite this, he harbors deep admiration for Batman and frequently intrudes upon his activities, creating challenges specifically to watch the Dark Knight in action.

The triumph of “The Batman” led to a separate universe called the “Batman Epic Crime Saga.” Initially, when the DC Universe (DCU) was formed, “The Batman” and related projects were placed within the DC Elseworlds category because they had no ties to the DCU shared universe. However, there have been whispers that the Batman from Reeves’ films, played by Robert Pattinson, might eventually become part of the DCU.

Currently, at the time of writing this piece, only one film within the Batman Epic Crime Saga apart from The Batman has been released, and that’s The Penguin (scheduled for 2024). Furthermore, a prequel comic book series entitled “The Riddler: Year One” was launched in 2022.

In a social media post from June 2025 (which was previously Twitter), Reeves and Tomlin are pictured casually seated together, with a script for “The Batman: Part II” visible before them. The sequel to “The Batman,” scheduled for US theaters on October 1, 2027, is what they’re working on.
