James Gunn recently discussed how the new DC Universe will strike a balance between individual stories and an overarching narrative, ensuring that viewers won’t need to watch Superman to follow shows like Peacemaker or Supergirl. In a comprehensive interview, he elaborated on this concept and shared his strategy for maintaining accessibility across various films and television series in the universe.
James Gunn hints Superman, Peacemaker and Supergirl are standalone stories
In essence, James Gunn has stated that although Superman plays a significant role in the “Gods and Monsters” era of the DC Universe, it’s possible to appreciate Peacemaker Season 2 and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow as standalone stories without needing to follow the broader narrative.
As a fellow enthusiast, I’d like to share my thoughts on this: “Though there are connections between Superman and Peacemaker that some might find intriguing, you don’t necessarily have to watch Superman to appreciate Peacemaker.” The same principle applies to Supergirl; viewers can enjoy it without prior knowledge of Superman.
Gunn shared that the aim is to make it easy for viewers to join any forthcoming DCU tale without feeling bewildered. He’s working hard to ensure that everyone can jump in at any point and follow the story, without worrying about missing crucial details. The strategy is to offer optional links instead of making viewing obligatory.
Although Superman is portrayed as a crucial figure in the overall narrative, Director Gunn likened the current phase to the initial stages of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, when events weren’t yet intricately intertwined. “For now,” he explained, “I’m aiming to make it so you don’t need to watch Superman to understand Supergirl.
In simpler terms, Gunn mentioned that each TV episode will have a quick summary at the beginning. Since they always introduce “What Happened Previously in the DCU” before an episode, it makes following the series easier for viewers, as they won’t need to watch every title consecutively to stay informed.
On July 11, 2025, Superman will hit the screens. Our team has concluded Peacemaker Season 2, set to air on August 21, 2025, and we’ve wrapped up Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Director Gunn has assured us that each of these projects can be enjoyed independently, yet they all contribute to the wider narrative of the DC Universe for viewers who follow the entire series lineup.
