James Gunn on Why He Didn’t Direct Superman Initially

In 2018, James Gunn opted to direct The Suicide Squad instead of taking on Superman, a decision he made public recently. Previously assigned to helm the 2025 film, Gunn explained his choice from the past and shared the reasons behind it. The upcoming Superman movie stars David Corenswet as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.

Why James Gunn chose to direct The Suicide Squad over Superman

Recently, the experienced movie director shared his reasons for turning down an offer to direct Superman in 2018 during a question-and-answer event held in London.

James Gunn confessed that he initially felt apprehensive about taking on the role of directing Superman in 2018. He explained, “At first, I declined the offer to direct Superman. The task seemed overwhelming, and I wasn’t confident about how to approach it. Moreover, there were complications surrounding Superman at that time, making it a potentially politically complex situation.

Gunn also mentioned that he opted for the 2021 film “The Suicide Squad” instead of Superman because it was more familiar to him. He explained, “So, I declined and chose ‘The Suicide Squad’, a team type that felt more comfortable to me, which turned out to be a good decision as it was enjoyable.

Over the years, Superman was a recurring idea in the mind of the Peacemaker’s creator. He often pondered, “Superman has been on my mind. I just can’t shake it off. ‘How would I approach it? What would this film look like? How could I bring it up-to-date for today’s viewers? How could it resonate with people?’ Eventually, the thought crossed his mind that perhaps he was capable of making it a reality.

Essentially, James Gunn stated that when given the chance to write Superman three years ago, he eagerly accepted it. He further mentioned, “Yes, I agreed when they proposed the concept of working on Superman back then.

Meanwhile, Superman is set to hit theaters on Friday, July 11, 2025.
