James Gunn, a co-CEO at DC Studios, recently discussed the moral compass of the iconic character, Superman, focusing on challenging ethical dilemmas like one involving Adolf Hitler. In a recent interview, Gunn delved into the rigid principles that guide this Superman, the thought process behind his choices, and how this new portrayal sets him apart from previous ones.
James Gunn says Superman would probably ‘save Hitler’
On the Armchair Expert podcast in July 2025, James Gunn spoke with Dax Shepard and Monica Padman about Superman’s moral code. Gunn explained that Superman is an idealist who believes in never taking a life under any circumstances. In response to this, Shepard asked, “Wouldn’t he have to make an exception for Hitler?” To which Gunn responded, “Even if it were Hitler, Superman would still try to save him.” Shepard then agreed, saying, “That’s his moral compass.
During a discussion on the moral standpoint of Superman and its impact on his choices, Gunn stated, “Superman firmly believes…that it’s not acceptable for people to perish if there’s a chance to prevent it, no matter what the circumstances.
The discussion centered around the ethical dilemma known as the trolley problem, where one must decide on saving lives under particular conditions. Gunn portrayed Superman as someone who would devise a solution to rescue everyone in such a scenario. He explained, “In that situation with the…if there’s a train heading towards five people, he wouldn’t just stand by; he’d think of a way to save them all.
The conversation touched upon how Superman will be portrayed in the upcoming film, with Gunn stating, “Superman remains Superman – he’s a kind-hearted alien with a familiar past.” He further explained, “I aimed to emphasize a significant phase in his life that hasn’t received much attention…his initial years as Superman and as Clark Kent.
During the podcast, Gunn didn’t delve deeper into the Hitler analogy. Instead, he discussed Superman’s ethical code within imaginary situations.
