As a longtime DC Universe enthusiast, I must say that the selection of “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” as the second film in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU is nothing short of exhilarating! The fact that this project wasn’t initially intended to follow Superman, but its exceptional script paved the way, speaks volumes about the quality we can expect.
Initially, other DC projects were slated to follow Superman, but eventually, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow took that position in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe. Here’s the story behind why it was selected over the previously announced DC films.
Supergirl’s ‘incredible script’ allowed it to become DCU’s second movie
In discussing the creation of “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,” Gunn mentioned that the storyline featuring Milly Alcock wasn’t originally intended to be a direct continuation of Superman. However, the exceptional quality of Ana Nogueira’s script accelerated the process. Additionally, Craig Gillespie joined as director relatively soon after.
Here’s what James Gunn told Omelete.com:
Although it wasn’t initially clear that our next film would be ‘Supergirl’, Ana’s outstanding script and the subsequent hiring of a talented director made it an appealing project. We decided to make the movie following Superman, as he presented the most suitable choice for our production.
Additionally, Gunn mentioned that scripts for other movies were prepared as well. However, due to the fact that the script for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow appeared finalized, it moved ahead more swiftly in the production process. He went on to say:
We’ve seen other films, but none have matched the excellence of this one. Therefore, we’re determined to continue our work, ensuring everything we produce is top-notch. Quality is our utmost priority in every project; it’s more significant than crafting an epic, sprawling storyline.
Although Gunn hasn’t disclosed details about other films, fans are aware of the confirmed schedule for the initial three DC Universe movies. The first film, featuring Superman, is set to release on July 11, 2025. This will be followed by Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow on June 26, 2026.
The third movie in the DC Universe is projected to feature Clayface, set to premiere on September 11, 2026. Following this, the release date for the Dynamic Duo has been set for June 30, 2028. It’s yet to be determined if any other film from the DC Universe’s Gods and Monsters series will be released between Clayface and the Dynamic Duo.
