James Gunn on How Clark’s Glasses Really Hide His Superman Identity

James Gunn, director of Superman, has shared insights about the iconic spectacles worn by Clark Kent to mask his Superman identity – a disguise beloved by many comic book enthusiasts. In the upcoming Superman film, where David Corenswet portrays the Man of Steel, these glasses seamlessly blend with his Clark Kent character, as evident in the movie’s trailers.

James Gunn says Clark uses hypno glasses to hide Superman identity

In a recent conversation, the director of The Suicide Squad discussed the mysterious eyewear known as the hypnosis glasses, a tool that Superman employs to protect his hidden persona.

In an interview with Comicbook.com, James Gunn admitted that he had initially overlooked the glasses’ special ability. This oversight was corrected by comic book writer Tom King. Notably, these hypnotic glasses, which enable Clark Kent to disguise himself as someone other than Superman, are indeed recognized as part of the comics’ canon.

In simpler terms, the co-CEO of DC Studios shared that the comic glasses have always been a problem for him, since as a child he found it hard to believe. However, while discussing this with comic book writer Tom King, he was told that there’s an explanation in the comics – these glasses are used for hypnotizing people, which is considered canonical (established and accepted as fact).

Furthermore, Gunn pointed out that David Corenswet’s appearance differs significantly from Clark Kent to Superman, even compared to Christopher Reeve.

In 1978, comic book enthusiasts were introduced to Clark’s hypnotic glasses in Superman (Vol. 1) #330. Moreover, the trailer reveals that Clark Kent subtly changes his voice and demeanor when he assumes his secret identity as Superman during an interview with Lois Lane, portrayed by Rachel Brosnahan.
