James Gunn on Batman Already Existing in the DCU: ‘We Don’t Need to Hear the Origin Story Again’

As a lifelong fan of DC Comics and a seasoned gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the rich lore of the DC Universe, I must say that James Gunn‘s latest revelation about Batman in the DCU animated series Creature Commandos has me beyond excited!

Growing up, Batman was always my favorite superhero. His dark and brooding demeanor resonated with me as a kid who often felt misunderstood, and his unwavering commitment to justice made him a true inspiration. So hearing that Gunn plans to explore the character in new and exciting ways within the DCU is music to my ears.

What I find particularly intriguing about this approach is Gunn’s decision to forgo Batman’s origin story. As a gamer, I’ve played countless games that feature Batman, and I’ve grown tired of retreading the same old origin tale over and over again. By skipping ahead to a point where Batman already exists in the universe, Gunn is taking a bold step towards creating something fresh and innovative.

Moreover, I appreciate Gunn’s emphasis on Batman’s popularity and his desire to do great things with the character. The Caped Crusader is undoubtedly one of the most iconic superheroes in the world, and it’s a testament to Gunn’s skill as a storyteller that he recognizes this fact and seeks to elevate the character even further.

In closing, I can’t wait to see what James Gunn has in store for Batman in the DCU. And who knows, maybe one day we’ll even get to team him up with Superman for some epic adventures! Just imagine Batman and Superman working together… now that’s a partnership that could only be described as “world-shattering” (and by world-shattering I mean it would be so awesome it might just shatter the very fabric of reality).

In the recent installment of the DC Universe animated series, known as “Creature Commandos”, Batman made a shocking cameo appearance. Moreover, filmmaker James Gunn hinted that when he eventually appears, the Caped Crusader will not have his backstory revealed.

What did James Gunn say about Batman in the DCU?

In a recent conversation with showrunner Dean Lorey on Rotten Tomatoes, Gunn discussed the amount of Batman featured in the episode. Originally, there was more Batman, but similar to the upcoming Superman film, Gunn stated that it cleverly demonstrated that within the DC Universe, Batman is already established.

Initially, when they handed it over to me, there were quite a few appearances of the Caped Crusader [Laughs]. But I wasn’t prepared to fully embrace this character yet, so I kept saying, ‘I need more subtle hints!’, ‘I need more subtle hints!’ It was an effective way for me to suggest that Batman is indeed present in this storyline.

Just as in a Superman film, where we find that Superman is already established among the citizens of Metropolis and his origins are familiar to us, so too is it that Batman is already present within this universe, requiring no retelling of his origin story.

Speaking about Batman within the DC Universe, Gunn referred to the character from Creature Commandos as “our DC Universe’s Batman.” He also expressed his fondness for this particular character.

According to Gunn, “I’ve always been a fan of Batman, and that affection started when I was young. He’s one of my all-time favorite characters.” He continued, “We have exciting plans for him. With his global popularity, he’s undoubtedly the world’s most renowned superhero. I can hardly wait to share more of him alongside Superman. And together…
