James Gunn Names 3 Dream DCU Directors, Including MCU Mainstay

Recently, James Gunn shared his preferred directors for prospective DC Universe films, and one individual who’s familiar with the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is among his choices.

Who are James Gunn’s dream DCU directors?

During a recent chat with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused Podcast, Gunn was asked who he’d like to see join the DC Universe as directors. Gunn specifically mentioned Ryan Coogler, director of Black Panther and Sinners, as one candidate, and also suggested Matt Reeves and Greta Gerwig for a compelling reason.

Gunn expressed his affection for those who produce pop films that continue to incorporate a personal touch. He particularly appreciates creators who take risks in the realm of blockbuster movies, as many productions lack such daring.

Gunn expressed his disappointment about modern “blockbuster films,” finding them monotonous as many seem to resemble each other too closely. He enjoys light-hearted movies, but grows tired of their repetitiveness. “I appreciate throwaway entertainment, but let’s make it quality throwaway. I enjoy big popcorn movies, but they become dull when they all start to look the same.

Fun fact, I’ve heard the name Ryan Coogler thrown around before by Gunn. Just recently, he shared that they had a chat reminiscing about the Black Panther premiere and the incredible buzz surrounding the movie. (As a gamer) I can’t help but feel like we’re all on the same team, ready for our next big adventure!

After the 2025 release of Superman, coming next in Gunn’s DC cinematic universe are two upcoming films: Supergirl, slated for a June 26, 2026 premiere, and Clayface, currently scheduled for September 11, 2026.
