James Gunn Gives DCU Flash & Clayface Movie Update

As a seasoned gamer and comic book enthusiast with over three decades of experience under my belt, I must say I’m intrigued by James Gunn‘s latest revelation regarding the DC Universe (DCU). The news about Clayface getting his own feature film has sent ripples through the comic book world, and as someone who has seen many a superhero rise and fall, I can’t help but feel a sense of curiosity.

James Gunn has explained why Clayface will be the third feature film set within the DCU.

Earlier this month, the DC Universe (DCU) commenced with the launch of the animated Creature Commandos series. James Gunn’s Superman film is set to hit theaters in July 2025, and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow has been slated for a release in June 2026.

More recent news reveals that Mike Flanagan, renowned for his work on “The Haunting of Hill House” and “Midnight Mass,” has penned a script for a Clayface movie set to hit screens in September 2026. At present, there is no director associated with the project.

In a conversation on Threads, Gunn was questioned about why Clayface might be chosen for the third DC Universe movie over more well-known DC Comics characters like Wonder Woman or The Flash.

At DC, we strictly adhere to the primary rule that no film can be approved for production until the script has been finalized. In this case, Flanagan had his script prepared.

What did James Gunn say about the DCU’s Flash?

Regarding Flash, Gunn also commented, “And as for the Flash we’re holding a beat on development.”

At present, no film set within the DC Universe focusing on the Flash has been officially confirmed. However, it’s worth mentioning that a Teen Titans movie is being worked on, though the specific characters who will appear in the film haven’t been disclosed yet. Interestingly, Wally West, also known as the Flash, is one of the original members of the Teen Titans in DC Comics history. The most recent portrayal of the Flash, Barry Allen, was seen in 2023’s The Flash, directed by Andy Muschietti, with Ezra Miller playing the role.

Talking to i09, Gunn also shared insights into how the Clayface film project was swiftly brought to life.

Originally, I hadn’t intended to produce a Clayface film,” Gunn shared. “However, Mike presented an outstanding concept that caught my interest. I never thought a Clayface movie would appeal to me, but here we are! Now, he needs to write the script, and we’ll see how that unfolds. He wrote the first draft, which was fantastic. The second draft was even better. At this point, I said, ‘Let’s move forward.’ We managed to find a spot for it in our schedule because if the content is good enough, we can always make it work.

Clayface will be released in United States theaters on September 11, 2026.
