James Gunn Explains Why Krypto Isn’t a Labrador in DCU Superman Movie

As a long-time DC Comics fan who has seen countless iterations of Superman and his canine companion Krypto, I must say that James Gunn‘s decision to deviate from the traditional depiction of Krypto as a labrador is both intriguing and refreshing. Given my personal experience with adopting a rescue dog named Ozu, who shares some striking similarities with the troubled yet lovable Krypto, I can understand the inspiration behind this unique twist.

James Gunn has an explanation as to why Krypto isn’t a labrador in 2025’s Superman.

In the upcoming DC Universe, Superman will make his first appearance as the lead in a feature film directed by Gunn. The cast includes David Corenswet portraying Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult stepping into the role of Lex Luthor.

On Tuesday, 15th October 2024, Gunn unveiled the initial snapshot of Krypto the Superdog, set to appear in the upcoming film, across various social platforms.

As a gamer putting pen to paper, I’m thrilled to share that Krypto is set to appear on our screens this summer in the upcoming Superman series! You see, my furry companion Ozu, who we rescued just as I was diving into writing Superman, served as the muse for Krypto.

What did James Gunn say about Krypto not being a lab?

After viewing the picture, numerous individuals on the internet pondered why Krypto, as often depicted in DC Comics, isn’t a Labrador Retriever instead.

In response to a comment about whether Krypto should be classified as a Lab, Gunn clarified that historically, Krypto is depicted as a generic white dog, with variations including a Lab, German Shepherd, Husky, or Dalmatian. However, since he’s an alien, his physical appearance might not strictly adhere to these earthly breeds.

Superman will be released in United States theaters and IMAX on July 11, 2025.
