In a recent chat, director James Gunn clarified the reason behind the term “bleeding” he used when discussing his take on the legendary superhero Superman, who will debut in the initial film of the new DC Universe. The role is played by David Corenswet.
James Gunn on why Superman bleeds in DCU movie
In some promotional materials for Superman, we see him injured, suggesting that the film will delve into his susceptibility. During a ScreenRant interview, Gunn confirmed that his portrayal of Superman would feature emotional and physical vulnerability, stating, “Yes, it does, to an extent.
The director shared that the movie offers viewers a glimpse into the private life of Superman. As Gunn puts it, despite featuring explosions, flying canines, and mechanical beings, the narrative fundamentally revolves around a character undergoing self-discovery. This individual, who initially perceives himself in a particular manner, uncovers this isn’t accurate, forcing him to reassess his identity in light of this revelation.
In his own words, Gunn mentioned that the film he made isn’t your typical Superman tale or the story of any ordinary hero. Instead, he emphasized, “It sets itself apart in this aspect. The character exhibits a greater vulnerability.
In the movie, I found it fascinating how Superman’s physical strength is counterbalanced by certain forces, as director James Gunn put it. He drew a parallel between this and the way Superman dealt with his Kryptonian peers in the 1980’s film, Superman II, where Christopher Reeve’s iconic character squared off against fellow denizens of Krypton.
As a gamer, I’ve always been captivated by the Guardians of the Galaxy director’s take on Superman. Unlike the movie version, this Superman won’t just heal instantly or rewind time with a spin. Instead, he’ll bear wounds and scars like a true Kryptonian. He even admitted to blending elements from various Supermen in the comics to create his unique power set.
In addition to the main cast, the upcoming movie features Rachel Brosnahan portraying Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult stepping into the role of Lex Luthor. The highly anticipated Superman will hit theaters on July 11, 2025.
