The details about the third installment of the Avatar series, named Avatar: Fire and Ash, are still largely unknown. Yet, it’s been mentioned by director James Cameron that this movie won’t shy away from making bold decisions.
What did James Cameron say about Avatar: Fire and Ash?
In an interview with Empire Magazine, Cameron expressed that the third installment aims to lead viewers to unexpected yet satisfying destinations. He assured that the filmmakers won’t shy away from taking bold steps.
Cameron stated, “We’re beginning to play around with it, adjust it, and modify it in various ways.” He added, “It’s quite complex. There’s a risk that we might be overindulging in our own ideas, and people might react, ‘Oh dear, this isn’t what I expected.’ However, if you’re not making bold decisions, you’re essentially wasting everyone’s effort and resources. While it doesn’t guarantee success, it’s essential. You need to shatter the mold every single time.
As a thrilled fan, I can’t help but share Cameron’s hint that the new film, Avatar: Fire and Ash, might feature some ingeniously crafted action sequences, a hallmark of the previous films in the series. While details about the movie are scarce, one thing is clear: we will be introduced to the ‘Ash Clan,’ a group guided by the character Varang, portrayed by Oona Chaplin.
Varang, a woman leading her people who’ve endured immense struggles, has become tough as a result. She’s prepared to do whatever it takes for them, including actions that might seem evil to us. In this movie, we aimed to avoid the straightforward ‘all humans are villains, all aliens are heroes’ narrative. Instead, we’re striving to progress beyond such dichotomies.

Cameron further praised Chaplin’s performance in Fire and Ash, stating that he didn’t fully grasp the excellence of her acting until they received the Wētā animation. Despite being an antagonist, she manages to make Chaplin’s character feel remarkably genuine and lifelike.
In U.S. cinemas, the film titled “Avatar: Fire and Ash” will premiere on December 19, 2025. The fourth installment of the series, “Avatar 4,” is scheduled for release on December 21, 2029, while it’s anticipated that “Avatar 5” will follow suit on December 19, 2031.
