James Cameron Says There’s ‘More Than a Plan’ for More Terminator Movies

As a devoted fan who has followed the Terminator franchise since its inception in 1984, I can hardly contain my excitement over the news of more movies in the works! The original film, directed by James Cameron, was a groundbreaking masterpiece that set the stage for five subsequent films and a television series.

Plans are being made for more Terminator movies.

1984 saw the debut of James Cameron’s classic sci-fi film, The Terminator, featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton. This initial release sparked a series that expanded to six cinematic sequels – Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991), Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003), Terminator Salvation (2009), Terminator Genisys (2015), and most recently, Terminator: Dark Fate (2019).

Additionally, back in 2008, the TV series “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles” gained popularity and lasted for two seasons. Recently, an anime adaptation titled “Terminator Zero” has been launched and can be streamed on Netflix now.

What did James Cameron say about future Terminator movies?

In an interview with Empire Magazine, director James Cameron shared that there’s not just one idea but “a comprehensive strategy” for continuing the Terminator franchise.

“It’s more than a plan,” he said. “That’s what we’re doing. That’s all I’ll say for right now.”

At present, it’s uncertain how much Cameron will be involved in upcoming Terminator films, given that he’s currently engrossed in creating his Avatar sequels. The following Avatar sequel is scheduled for release in 2025.

Cameron emphasized the importance of creating fresh and distinctive narratives within the universe of The Terminator as we proceed.

He explained, “You can become overly engrossed in it, and as a result, you might lose a fresh audience because they’re not as interested in those topics as you assume. That’s the risk, which is also applicable to ‘Avatar’, but we’ve demonstrated that we have offerings for new audiences.

He went on to say, “Your characters lack power and support, yet they persist in their struggle for survival against the odds. They navigate around established authority but manage to keep their moral bearings intact. Add AI to the equation – that’s a recipe for compelling storytelling today, isn’t it? I am confident that future Terminator films will not only exist, but they’ll be amazing. However, now is the time to let go of all familiar imagery.
