Recently, Tony Gilroy, the mind behind Andor, shared insights on a proposal for a James Bond film that he and acclaimed director-writer Steven Soderbergh developed.
What was the 60s 007 movie about?
In an interview on The Rogue Ones podcast, Gilroy shared a tale told by Soderbergh regarding his desire to direct a James Bond film. He revealed that Soderbergh had pitched a concept for the movie which would see Bond revisiting the 1960s and be a black-and-white production he himself would have written.
Gilroy stated, “It appears to me that Steven made two attempts to enter the Bond universe. What I’m hearing now seems extremely similar to what [Steven] had proposed years ago.” This suggests Soderbergh’s past efforts to influence the Broccolis creatively and the recent changes taking place.
As a nostalgia-loving enthusiast, I yearned to step back in time to the ’60s and create a timeless masterpiece, capturing the essence of Carnaby Street in black-and-white. The concept struck me as incredibly groovy, almost to the tune of $30 million, but alas, nobody seemed willing to take the reins. They simply wouldn’t relinquish control.
Gilroy likewise shared insights on a specific antagonist he envisioned for the series, admitting that it can sometimes be challenging to discover suitable ones.
On one occasion, Gilroy expressed, albeit reluctantly, about having an exceptional antagonist. He noted that the Bond series often struggles to find a compelling villain. In his view, they haven’t had a successful villain in a considerable period. He emphasized that this is the main issue, and once it’s addressed, the rest falls into place. Additionally, he mentioned another antagonist from another film that could have been used, and he and Steven had discussed collaborating on this idea, but it didn’t seem to progress further.
After the surprising announcement earlier this year, the James Bond franchise has been passed on to Amazon MGM Studios, as producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson have chosen to step down from their long-standing roles as producers. This move grants Amazon MGM Studios creative control over the franchise. In a unique arrangement, Amazon MGM Studios and the duo will establish a new joint venture company, which will manage the rights to the Bond franchise’s intellectual property.
In the future, all three parties will maintain their ownership of the Bond series, yet Amazon MGM Studios will take over creative control – a role previously held by Broccoli and Wilson. Prior to this decision, both these parties were recognized for their intense guardianship of the franchise. However, in a recent statement, Wilson expressed his intention to redirect his focus towards artistic endeavors and charitable projects. Meanwhile, Broccoli stated that she would be dedicating her time to other ventures instead.
The details concerning the upcoming James Bond films, including their storylines, are currently shrouded in secrecy.
