As a die-hard admirer of the exceptional talent that is Vinayakan, I can’t help but share his recent bold statement directed at renowned Malayalam film producer and actress, Keerthy Suresh’s father, Suresh Kumar. It’s stirring quite a buzz in our cherished Malayalam cinema world!
As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I can’t help but passionately respond to the producer’s latest comments on actors venturing into movie production: “Does cinema belong to your family business? You should advise your spouse and kids against making films. I’m an actor, and if I feel like it, I’ll produce, direct, distribute, and screen movies – that’s my right as a creative artist in India! Long live India!
Following the criticism made by G Suresh Kumar about actors producing their own movies, which he expressed in a recent interview, an actor subsequently made a comment in response. In this interview, G Suresh Kumar had voiced his concerns about the current state of the Malayalam film industry and the excessive fees that actors demand.
The filmmaker openly criticized the film industry, stating that it’s often the actors or stars who brag about movies grossing over 100 crores and joining a club based on questionable figures. On the other hand, the people behind the films, who truly understand their success, tend to avoid making such boasts.
At a recent news conference, Suresh Kumar additionally conveyed that the Malayalam film industry and some of its producers are currently unable to produce movies, as many are considering emigration due to financial hardship.
The producer attributes this predicament to the high salary demands made by actors, and until they lower their wages, progress cannot be made.
On June 1, 2025, Suresh Kumar declared that the Malayalam film industry would temporarily halt operations due to a strike by producers who find themselves financially strained and feel unheard.
The producer is advocating for three requests to the government:
1. Exemption of the industry from both the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and Entertainment Tax.
2. A decrease in the pay of actors (remuneration).
3. Consideration and implementation of these proposed changes.
It seems like the pause in the release and production of Malayalam films is likely due to those films not doing well financially at the box office. According to reports, a total of 176 movies that were released in 2024 ended up being financial failures.
