Jack Black Says Tenacious D Will ‘Be Back’ Following Trump Assassination Joke Controversy

As a gamer with a knack for rock music and a deep appreciation for Tenacious D, I can’t help but feel a mix of anticipation and apprehension upon hearing Jack Black’s latest statement about their return.

Jack Black says that Tenacious D will “be back” at some point.

Back in July 2024, I found myself in a surprising turn of events when my band, Tenacious D, decided to call off the rest of our tour. This was all due to a thoughtless joke made by Kyle Gass, which sparked quite a controversy regarding an assassination attempt on Donald Trump. It wasn’t an easy decision, but we felt it was necessary to step back and avoid causing any more stir in such sensitive times.

The comment was made during the band’s concert on July 14 in Australia. In an unexpected instance when Black presented a cake for Gass’ 64th birthday, Gass was asked to make a wish and replied, “Let’s not forget about Trump next time,” as he blew out the candles.

Black expressed his disapproval of Gass’ remark on social media platforms, and simultaneously revealed that the remaining shows for the Tenacious D tour would no longer take place.

“Black was taken aback by the remarks made during the performance on Sunday. He firmly believes in upholding respect and equality, and rejects any form of hate speech or incitement to political violence. After careful consideration, he decided that continuing with the Tenacious D tour no longer feels right, and all future projects are temporarily halted. Black expressed his gratitude towards the fans for their backing and understanding.”

What did Jack Black say about Tenacious D’s return?

Currently, when talking to Variety, Black hinted that Tenacious D might make a comeback at some undetermined future time, without sharing any concrete details about their return.

“We need to take a break,” Black said. “Everybody needs a break sometimes. And we’ll be back.”

When queried about whether he’s talked to Gass after the sudden conclusion of the tour, Black replied, “Yes, we’re still friends. Our relationship remains unaltered. Sometimes, things just need time… We’ll reunite when it feels appropriate.”

Following the cancellation of the tour, Gass expressed his apologies for his comment. In a statement, he admitted that the joke he made during the show in Sydney was highly offensive, dangerous, and a huge mistake. He clarified that he does not endorse any form of violence against anyone. He acknowledged that what happened was a tragedy and deeply regretted his poor judgment. He apologized sincerely to those who were let down and expressed remorse for any pain he may have caused.
