It’s Official – a Handheld Xbox is Coming This Fall

Microsoft has officially announced a timeframe for their long-awaited foray into handheld gaming: holiday 2025. Today, they unveiled two new devices, the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X, developed in collaboration with ASUS. These gadgets are designed to cater to both casual and dedicated gamers.

According to ASUS and Microsoft, the new handheld gaming devices from Xbox have been specifically designed and developed over a considerable period of time. They are intended for Xbox players and boast contoured grips that mimic the feel of Xbox Wireless Controllers, promising a comfortable gaming experience throughout the day.

These devices boast identical specifications in terms of their 7-inch, 16:9, 1080p touchscreen IPS display with FreeSync Premium and a rapid refresh rate of 120Hz. They also offer Wi-Fi 6 connectivity and Bluetooth 5.4. Despite sharing the same layout for buttons and overall dimensions, their characteristics diverge significantly from that point onwards.

The “ROG Xbox Ally” – priced lower but yet to be finalized – is powered by AMD’s ‘Ryzen Z2 A’ processor, comes with 16GB of RAM and a 512GB internal storage. While it can output 1080p, Microsoft has specified that this model is designed for 720p gaming due to its less potent specifications. It boasts a 60Wh battery and features two USB 3.2 Type-C ports.

Simultaneously, the upgraded ROG Xbox Ally X boasts AMD’s enhanced ‘Ryzen Z2 Extreme’ processor. It sports a larger memory of 24GB (8GB more than its predecessor), doubles the internal storage with a 1TB SSD, and comes equipped with an 80Wh battery. One of its Type-C ports is compatible with USB 4 for faster data transfer. Both versions offer microSD card readers for simple user-initiated storage upgrades.

Similar to the initial ROG Ally and ROG Ally X models, the recently introduced ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X devices share the commonality of being technical gaming PCs operating on Windows. However, unlike their predecessors, they are set to debut with a brand-new interface tailored exclusively for handheld gaming. Essentially, rather than booting into the conventional, less gamer-friendly Windows interface like a standard PC, these new devices will directly launch into an interface designed by Xbox engineers – a “full-screen [Xbox] experience” that Microsoft claims has been optimized specifically for portable gaming.

The revamped user interface (UI) isn’t merely an aesthetic overhaul; it’s not just about enhancing the user experience (UX). Essentially, these software adjustments – seemingly minor on the surface – are intended to optimize the system for superior performance overall. By streamlining some of the backend processes common in a standard Windows machine, the latest Xbox handhelds will benefit from enhanced RAM and computational power.

At this point, neither Microsoft nor ASUS have announced a specific launch date or final cost. However, keep an eye out for updates when they become available. For now, here’s the official trailer to whet your appetite.
