As a gamer who’s been through countless reboots and continuations of beloved franchises, I can’t help but admire Jon Watts’ decision to step away from the MCU at the peak of its success. It’s like hitting that level 99 boss, knowing you could keep grinding, but deciding it’s time for a new adventure instead.
In simpler terms, the three Spider-Man movies set within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) have given a fresh coat of paint to the character of Peter Parker, placing him firmly in the current MCU storyline.
In the movie “No Way Home,” the trilogy wrapped up nicely, leaving us content as Tom Holland’s character found himself in a predicament reminiscent of our familiar Spider-Man character.
Now, director Jon Watts has broken his silence about the reason he left the MCU.
Stopping At The Peak
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Jon Watts told the magazine why he left the MCU.
The astonishing success of Spider-Man: No Way Home, which earned more than a billion dollars at the box office and set a new benchmark among MCU films, is impressive enough on its own. However, director Jon Watts added an additional perspective by stating:
That was such a specific moment in time, and the reaction to that movie was just so unbelievable. It’s never going to be like this, ever again.
Credit goes to Watts for recognizing the towering stature of this trilogy and choosing to depart while it was at the zenith of its fame.
Initially, he had been slated to lead the upcoming projects titled “Avengers Doomsday” and “Secret Wars“, but eventually chose to withdraw from the filmmaking process.
The director has shifted his focus to new endeavors, specifically the forthcoming film titled “Wolfs,” a blend of thrill and comedy, featuring acting talents like Brad Pitt and George Clooney.
It’s quite evident that his part in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has significantly boosted his influence in Hollywood, giving him the opportunity to collaborate with renowned actors.
