Is Ulf really the son of Baelon in House of the Dragon?

As a long-time fan of the A Song of Ice and Fire series and now a dedicated viewer of House of the Dragon, I’ve been intrigued by the mysterious figure of Ulf White. In episode 3 of season 2, we were introduced to him as an illegitimate Targaryen who believes he is a dragonseed. This revelation immediately caught my attention and made me ponder – could Ulf really be related to the Dragonline? And what implications would that have for the ongoing power struggle between the Greens and Blacks?

As a gamer, I’d put it this way: In the second episode of House of the Dragon Season 2 for me, we were introduced to Ulf White. He left a strong impact right away by revealing that he considers himself a Targaryen bastard, or in simpler terms, a dragonseed.

Based on my experience as a fantasy literature enthusiast and avid fan of intriguing character backstories, I can’t help but ponder over this intriguing question: “Is Ulf, in fact, a dragonseed, and if so, what could that imply as the story unfolds?”

Ulf may be the son of Baelor in House of the Dragon

Ulf hasn’t revealed who his supposed father is, but based on the timeline and “A Song of Ice and Fire” series, Ulf could be Baelor the Great’s illegitimate son. Baelor was married to Alyssa, but after her death, he didn’t remarry. However, he had liaisons with many women in King’s Landing, suggesting Ulf as a possible result of one of these encounters.

Simultaneously, the book does not provide confirmation for this occurrence. Additionally, it’s worth mentioning that Targaryen rulers and lords practiced a tradition, which involved sleeping with common women on their wedding night, thus being the first to bed them before their husbands. This custom wasn’t welcomed by the smallfolk, but who could challenge a king? As a result, there’s a possibility that any Targaryen ruler before Viserys and Daemon could be Ulf’s father.

Ulf White will ride a dragon in House of the Dragon

In George R.R. Martin’s book “Fire & Blood, we discover that Ulf possesses a unique ability to connect with dragons. He eventually mounts Silverwing, one of the dragons residing at Dragonstone. Though Ulf currently dwells in King’s Landing, it is the Blacks who initiate the dragonrider selection process, hence he belongs to Team Black.

Ulf initially supports the Greens during the civil war, but later changes allegiance. At the Battle of Tumbleton, he is on their side. However, this loyalty doesn’t last long as the thought of seizing the Iron Throne for himself crosses his mind. This surprising desire arises despite Ulf being a potential prince.

Unfortunately, his attempt wasn’t successful. The opposition refused to acknowledge him as their ruler, and ultimately, he met a tragic end by being poisoned.
