As a long-time K-pop enthusiast who has followed the industry from its humble beginnings to its current global dominance, I am thrilled about the emergence of KATSEYE, a group that seems to be bridging the gap between East and West. While they may not be strictly classified as a K-pop group due to their multi-national composition and primary language being English, they certainly embody many of the elements that have made K-pop so successful.
In partnership with Geffen Records, HYBE introduced the international music collective known as KATSEYE. Boasting support from HYBE Labels, KATSEYE has garnered attention among K-pop enthusiasts. However, one might wonder: Does KATSEYE fall under the category of a K-pop group?
KATSEYE originated as a spin-off from the survival reality series titled “The Debut: Dream Academy.” Initially, twenty contestants took part in this survival program, but only six newcomers managed to secure their spots in the final cast list of the show.
Prior to the launch of KATSEYE, Bang Si Hyuk, the creator of K-pop label HYBE, revealed his plans for the band. He discussed the cooperative project with Geffen Records, a company instrumental in promoting the group in the United States.
One aspect of K-pop I’m thrilled Katsey has embraced is the dance challenges. Right now, I’m absolutely loving it and diving deep into learning the choreography!

KATSYE: Is it a K-pop group?
While KATSEYE may share some musical elements with K-pop groups, it’s important to note that they are not a traditional K-pop act. Instead, this multinational group plans to produce music primarily in English, targeting a global audience, including the United States.
In a recent interview, Bang Si Hyuk, founder of HYBE, shared the team’s idea. He expressed, “My longtime goal has been to provide a platform for exceptional young talents to join an extraordinary K-pop group.”
As someone who has grown up with the rich and vibrant world of K-pop, I strongly believe that taking the ‘K’ out of K-pop could help it achieve global mainstream success. With my personal experience of being captivated by this genre, I can attest to its universal appeal. The music, dance, fashion, and storytelling in K-pop are simply unmatched, making it a unique and compelling offering in the world of entertainment.
As a devoted fan, I’m eagerly anticipating the debut of KATSYE, though it deviates slightly from traditional K-pop groups. Yet, with Bang Si Hyuk at the helm, it promises to embody the essence of K-pop’s dominant themes. Expect to see us participating in engaging TikTok and Instagram challenges, as well as a meticulously planned promotional strategy. In essence, he aims to replicate the triumphant formula that propelled BTS to global stardom, ensuring this new group reaches even greater heights.
On August 16th at midnight Eastern Time, 1 p.m. Korean Standard Time, 5 a.m. British Summer Time, and 9:30 a.m. Indian Standard Time, KATSEYE will debut their first EP titled SIS (Soft Is Strong). Prior to its release, the band unveiled their latest track “Touch” on July 26th, 2024, which quickly amassed over 1.8 million views in just five days after it was made public.
