As a die-hard fan of Chicago PD, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and apprehension after watching Burgess get promoted to a full detective. Having followed her journey since the very beginning, it’s heartening to see her hard work finally pay off. However, the prospect of her staying in Intelligence while also being a detective is intriguing.
Burgess may have achieved her dream on Chicago PD, but does that mean she’s leaving Intelligence?
Caution: This article contains SPOILERS for Chicago PD Season 12, Episode 6
Burgess had been striving for a long time to pass the exam and become a fully-fledged detective, a dream she’s held since the start of Chicago PD. As part of this endeavor, she was entrusted with the lead role in a murder investigation, partnering with seasoned detective Suarez.
At some point, the duo parted ways as Burgess confronted and fended off another person, thus protecting Suarez who was left to handle things alone. Eventually, Burgess advanced in rank, with Suarez stating that she was assigning Burgess back to Intelligence. She mentioned this while expressing that although Burgess was an excellent officer, she still held a patrol mentality and required more street-level exposure, which she wasn’t receiving under Voight.
Despite Ruzek’s objections, Burgess found herself drawn to a six-month stint in Chicago’s central district. However, Deputy Chief Reid made it clear that she was committed to Intelligence. While Burgess felt content with this arrangement, Voight showed concern about the potential cost of Reid’s decision.
What does this mean for Burgess in Chicago PD?
Speaking to TVLine, Marina Squerciati shared what the promotion means for Burgess going forward.
So far, it hasn’t really come to bear. It’s like when you get a promotion…you don’t want to be, like, bossy all of a sudden. So it’s treating it with kid gloves, but also inhabiting your power, I guess. Like, trying to be respectful of people and not seem like, “Well, now I’m here, and everyone’s listening to me,” but also know that, like, “OK, I’m a detective. I deserve this. I earned it.”
Squerciati mentioned that she plans to portray her character in a slightly unique manner, with Burgess demonstrating a greater sense of authority while also expressing worries about her decisions. This new approach will highlight how Burgess’s background with the Intelligence Unit and Voight proves beneficial for her role, contrary to Saurez’s assumptions.
Like, what she considered her strengths, somebody sees as a weakness, and that’s always going to throw you…. It’s what, ultimately, Suarez thinks is going to be her downfall. I think that was a real eye-opener. And also, saying that Voight protects her from the dirt, from the scum, I think that’s really what hit her the most. Like, that she’s able to be the cop she is and still have, maybe, the heart that Suarez doesn’t have because of Voight.
Regarding Reid, Squerciati implied that he might eventually demand some form of compensation for allowing Burgess to remain in Intelligence. Additionally, she mentioned that despite Burgess now being Adam’s superior officer, they are still preparing for their wedding, a ceremony that could potentially involve the return of Adam’s father, which may lead to complications.
In summary, Burgess remains with Intelligence while also serving as a fully-fledged detective. However, subtle indications suggest potential consequences might arise in the future as Chicago PD progresses.
