A contributor at Spiked argues that Neil Gaiman, who is facing criticism, has attempted to employ autism as a protective barrier for his questionable actions. However, the author clarifies why such a justification should not be deemed appropriate in this context.
Neil Gaiman, Kanye West, and Gregg Wallace share a commonality – they’ve all been involved in questionable behaviors or scandals. Last year, Gaiman faced allegations of sexual misconduct from several women, as did Wallace, while West continually finds himself entangled in various controversies.
The second commonality is that these individuals appear to attribute part of their behavior to autism. For instance, Wallace defended his sexually inappropriate actions towards his colleagues by stating that they were due to his unrecognized autism. Likewise, one of Gaiman’s accusers claimed that the author used his autism as an excuse for not understanding her non-verbal cues and social signals. Similarly, West has suggested that his autism may have played a role in his anti-Semitic remarks and unusual behavior.
It’s quite possible that Gaiman, Wallace, and West might have autism, a condition characterized by differences in communication and sensory processing. People with autism, including myself, tend to perceive the social and sensory world uniquely compared to most others. However, while there are shared traits, autism can present differently among individuals, without a single defining example. Some individuals may be non-verbal, experience constant fidgeting, or struggle with eye contact, while others might face challenges in forming friendships, engaging in small talk, and navigating romantic relationships. Autism’s impact on an individual can range significantly, but the majority of diagnosed individuals are still capable of living normally within society.
For individuals with autism, it’s common not to automatically grasp social norms and cultural expectations. This can result in misunderstandings about when humor is appropriate, how to build professional connections, or even unintentionally disrupting or offending others during a conversation.
The truth is, our society caters predominantly to those who aren’t autistic, or neurotypical individuals. This can sometimes make autistic individuals appear aloof, when in fact they are just being themselves. I, too, have found myself coming across as unsociable in such situations, and for that, I’ve always extended my heartfelt apologies. An apology might not seem just in these circumstances since an autistic person’s unsociable behavior is generally unintentional. However, life isn’t fair, and everyone, regardless of their status, faces unique challenges. These challenges may shed light on unusual behavior, but they should never be seen as excuses for such actions.
Correct.
It’s equally valid to argue that certain aspects of drug addiction can exacerbate mental instability as severely as alcohol abuse, yet neither drugs nor alcohol should be used to justify heinous actions. It’s appalling that Gaiman resorts to such a weak defense to avoid his obligations, and the same criticism applies to the other two individuals mentioned.
Just as drug addiction can lead to a level of madness similar to alcohol abuse, neither substance should be used as a means to justify unlawful actions. It’s disgraceful that Gaiman uses such a flimsy argument to shirk responsibilities, and the same sentiment applies to the other two individuals in question.
In connection with this topic, it was reported by The Boston Globe that a performance by Amanda Palmer, previously scheduled in Brooklyn, has been canceled following concerns about her involvement in the overall scandal.
A concert hall in Brooklyn has called off an upcoming show featuring Amanda Palmer, following numerous complaints, among them one from a woman claiming she was sexually assaulted by Neil Gaiman, Palmer’s former spouse – a renowned science fiction author.
In a Saturday email to Globe, De Archuleta confirmed that Palmer’s performance at the non-profit venue has been cancelled. “Upon learning about the intricate predicament involving the artist,” De Archuleta explained, “the Board of Trustees decided against proceeding with the show.
In the podcast and New York magazine piece, it’s mentioned that the individual who asked National Sawdust to cancel its invitation for Amanda Palmer’s performance was also involved. This person wrote an email to the venue expressing strong disapproval, stating: “I am writing to express a significant concern about your decision to host an Amanda Palmer show at your esteemed venue… Currently, she is embroiled in a civil lawsuit that suggests her complicity in sex trafficking. Her beliefs appear to contradict those of National Sawdust. By providing her with a stage, you risk not only offending but also muting the voices of her numerous victims.
On Saturday, Dini von Mueffling, Palmer’s publicist, confirmed through a statement to the Globe that the canceled show will now be held at City Winery New York City. Michael Dorf, the CEO of City Winery, had previously written in an email, “We are pleased to confirm our stage for her art.
Despite a different location playing host to Palmer, it’s evident that the start of her career is faltering due to her involvement in the Gaiman sexual abuse allegations.

Intriguing news from Cheat Sheet: Joss Whedon, the controversial writer for TV, movies, and comics, and Michelle Trachtenberg, the talented actress who passed away prematurely, have been in the spotlight due to some interesting revelations. The article highlights that Whedon was not given the opportunity to write specific roles for Trachtenberg in his work.
A recent story from Cheat Sheet talks about Joss Whedon, a writer who’s been in trouble before, and Michelle Trachtenberg, an actress who died too young. The article brings up the fact that Whedon couldn’t write certain parts for Trachtenberg in his projects.
Joss Whedon was responsible for producing the television show Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which featured Michelle Trachtenberg among its cast members. When Trachtenberg was still a teenager, Whedon, who later directed The Avengers, began working with her, moving from child roles to more mature parts. However, during filming, Trachtenberg alleged that Whedon’s behavior on set caused issues for her. In fact, she revealed that he was not permitted to be alone with her while shooting the show.
It seems there’s some history that led to Whedon being distanced from Trachtenberg in the past. While the details aren’t entirely known, fans have formed their own theories about the situation.
As a passionate film enthusiast, I recall the events of 2021 when my Buffy the Vampire Slayer co-star, Charisma Carpenter, bravely spoke out against our showrunner Joss Whedon. My dear friend Sarah Michelle Gellar publicly supported her on social media platforms. In solidarity and to add my voice, I shared Sarah’s post, expressing my own thoughts and sentiments regarding the situation.
Gellar expressed a desire to move beyond being continuously linked to the name Joss Whedon. Furthermore, she voiced her support for all victims of abuse and took pride in those who bravely shared their experiences.
Trachtenberg re-posted Gellar’s statement. She wrote that she had finally found the courage to tell her story, which needed to be heard. Though the actress didn’t provide specific details, she referred to “inappropriate behavior” by Whedon. Trachtenberg also mentioned a rule prohibiting Whedon from being alone with Michelle again in the future. Since Buffy ended long ago, Trachtenberg held onto her feelings about Whedon for a long time without speaking up. Despite the vague nature of her statements, they carry significant weight. And other individuals have since come forward as well.
Absolutely, in addition to Gal Gadot and Ray Fisher, other individuals mentioned earlier have expressed concerns regarding him, with Fisher allegedly also having issues with Geoff Johns. It’s intriguing to note that a policy was established to prevent Whedon from being alone with the lead actor of the show due to his behavior. Although no definitive reports suggest he has done as much harm as Harvey Weinstein, these recent disclosures have sparked concerns about potential future revelations concerning Joss Whedon and the Buffy franchise that could significantly tarnish its reputation.
Let’s reminisce about how Buffy comics tackled the topic of abortion and Joss Whedon, who was the screenwriter for Alien: Resurrection in 1997, also explored a similar theme in that film. I recall an opinion piece from John Simon of National Review at the time criticizing a scene in which Ellen Ripley’s clone expels a creature born from a Xenomorph queen as being remarkably close to an abortion portrayal on the big screen. This seems to indicate Whedon’s controversial political views. It’s for this reason that fewer movies featuring scripts about abortion might be preferable.
With this, we gain insight into the reasons behind the tarnished reputation of these once greatly admired pop culture icons, which may contribute to their being less favorably recalled in future generations.
