Ironheart Officially Names Marvel’s First Villain From Iron Man

In the new Ironheart series on Disney+, although Riri Williams tries to distance herself from Tony Stark’s legacy, the show eventually delves into the Iron Man storyline by mentioning the villain, ‘Iron Monger.’ This makes Ironheart the first time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that Obadiah Stane, who was played by Jeff Bridges in the 2008 film, is referred to using his comic-book accurate title in live-action.

Iron Monger from Iron Man namedropped in Ironheart

17 years following Jon Favreau’s Iron Man debut, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has now officially linked Obadiah Stane as the movie’s antagonist. In Episode 3 of Ironheart, Alden Ehrenreich’s character subtly mentions “Iron Monger” in conversation with Riri Williams. This is the initial instance where

In the series, Alden Ehrenreich’s character is first presented as Joe McGillicuddy, but in Episode 3, it’s unveiled that he’s actually Ezekiel Stane, son of Obadiah Stane. As for Williams, her inspiration to create an Iron suit comes from her stepfather, Gary. Joe expresses his admiration for the positive influence she’s had on Williams, stating that she’s fortunate to have found such a perfect role model. Furthermore, he refers to his own father as having been an “Iron Monger,” hinting at a connection to the Iron Man universe.

In a nod to the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s (MCU) history, the Ironheart easter egg marks the debut of the Iron Monger moniker. Interestingly, Jeff Bridges’ character in the 2008 Iron Man film subtly foreshadowed his future transformation by suggesting they were “iron mongers,” a term used for blacksmiths who create and sell weapons, when trying to convince Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark to continue manufacturing arms.

In Alden Ehrenreich’s character adopting the moniker “Iron Monger” for his father, Ironheart skillfully maintains a smooth link to its previous installment through an inventive approach. However, it remains unclear whether Ezekiel Stane will assume a more significant role in future Marvel productions, given his strong ties to the narrative of Iron Man.
