Although the first official trailer for the upcoming Ironheart series from Marvel was just released, it has quickly found itself in a flurry of controversies, amassing over 420,000 dislikes within five days. To make matters worse, co-creator Mike Deodato Jr. has made headlines with his assertion that Marvel did not adequately compensate him before proceeding with the Dominique Thorne-led series.
Mike Deodato Jr. says Marvel ‘can do better’ after not getting paid for the Ironheart series
As a die-hard fan, I’m sharing that the creative mind behind many comic book masterpieces, namely myself, collaborated with writer Brian Michael Bendis in bringing Riri Williams to life. Lately, I’ve been voicing my discontent on social media platforms regarding Marvel’s decision not to compensate me for the upcoming Ironheart series.
Prior to Ironheart’s trailer debut, Deodato expressed a heartfelt sentiment via his Instagram account. He outlined how Marvel had neglected to financially recognize his role in the series development. In the post, Deodato initially conveyed his excitement about finally witnessing his creation transition from comic books to television. “As a comic book artist,” he underscored, “there are few sensations more rewarding than observing a character you played a part in creating appear on the big screen.

After that, Deodato began discussing the fact that Marvel didn’t adequately compensate him for his work on the Ironheart series. He brought attention to the influence this has on the drive and motivation of creators. In a post, he wrote, “Although I am thrilled about this achievement, there is still a sour note present. You see, while Marvel has created an empire valued at billions by utilizing its creators, the payment structure hasn’t matched the level of success.
The creator who helped bring Ironheart to life commented, “It’s only right that when a character you deeply care for contributes significantly to the operation of a multibillion-dollar corporation, a modest portion of its success should be returned. Creators don’t demand vast fortunes; they simply seek acknowledgment and a fair compensation reflecting their work. It’s not only morally correct—it’s smart business.
Mike Deodato Jr. expressed his hope that someday, businesses built on creativity will fully appreciate the worth we contribute. In particular, Marvel, there’s room for improvement in this regard.
As a dedicated gamer, I’m hyped! Despite the hurdles we’ve been facing, Marvel’s Ironheart is set to drop on Disney+ come June 24, 2025. Can’t wait for this one!
