Iron Man Director Developing Oswald the Lucky Rabbit Disney+ Show

A long-awaited television show featuring the character “Oswald the Lucky Rabbit” is now being developed, with Jon Favreau, renowned for directing Iron Man, taking on dual roles as both writer and producer, all under the banner of Walt Disney Studios.

The upcoming project will blend animation and real-life footage, primarily centering around Walt Disney’s witty and egotistical character, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. This iconic character holds significant importance to the Walt Disney Company as he played a crucial role in sparking the creation of the globally recognized cartoon character.

In 1923, instead of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, which Disney had created and featured in their 27 animated shorts up until 1928, Universal Studios took control over. In response, Disney developed a character who bore an uncanny resemblance to Oswald – Mickey Mouse. Eventually, Mickey became the beloved mascot of The Walt Disney Company.

Who’s behind Oswald the Lucky Rabbit TV series?

Disney’s Chief Executive Officer, Bob Iger, emphasized the importance of reacquiring Oswald, making it a top goal for the company. In the year 2006, they successfully secured the rights to the character’s trademark.

In a future development, the upcoming Oswald the Lucky Rabbit TV series is set to be penned and overseen by director Favreau on Disney+. Renowned for his works like Elf and Zathura: A Space Adventure, Favreau has previously taken charge as both writer and executive producer of The Mandalorian, and also served in an executive role for The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka, and Star Wars: Skeleton Crew.

Jon Favreau, who previously directed the live-action/photorealistic animation remake of Disney’s “The Jungle Book,” is also responsible for the upcoming movie “The Mandalorian & Grogu” set for release in May 2026. This production will welcome Pedro Pascal back as Din Djarin.

Jon Favreau is particularly recognized for his work as the director of the initial two Iron Man films starring Robert Downey Jr., produced by Marvel Studios.
