Invincible’s Jeffrey Dean Morgan Describes Voicing Conquest as ‘Physically Hard’

Jeffrey Dean Morgan, the actor behind Conquest in the Prime Video series ‘Invincible’, commented on how challenging the role was. Prior to this, Morgan worked with Steven Yeun, who portrays Markus Sebastian “Mark” Grayson / Invincible, on The Walking Dead. Interestingly, Morgan’s character from that show, Negan, was responsible for killing Glenn, played by Yeun, using a spiked baseball bat.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan on why playing Conquest was ‘hard’ in Invincible Season 3

During a chat with Entertainment Weekly, Morgan discussed his character Conquest from Invincible and admitted it was demanding physically. He explained, “I can’t quite put my finger on why acting out destruction in a recording booth is so tough, but it certainly takes a toll on me.

According to series creator Robert Kirkman, it seems Jeffrey Dean Morgan was envisioned for the role of Conquest “likely since the inception of the show.” Kirkman elaborated, “Conquest requires a lot of subtlety. There’s an immense amount of personality hidden beneath his giant, powerful, destructive exterior. And I knew Jeffrey had the ability to bring that out.

In Season 3 Episode 7 of Invincible, titled “What Have I Done?”, Conquest first appears. This is near the end of the episode. After a fierce fight between Mark and Invincibles from different realms, as well as Angstrom, an elderly Viltrumite confronts Mark. This is none other than Conquest, who attacks Mark for not subjugating Earth. As the credits begin to roll, Mark and Conquest charge towards each other, setting up their imminent battle.

In a playful tone, Morgan commented on his involvement in the project, saying, “I was simply delighted to join and offer Steven an opportunity for recompense, alluding to the fact that Negan took Glenn’s life on The Walking Dead.

As a devoted fan, I too noticed the striking resemblances between Negan and Conquest in our recent discussion. Yet, when it came to delving deeper into their characters, I made a conscious effort to switch up my voice inflection to clearly demonstrate the distinct differences. After so many years immersed in the character of Negan, it’s almost second nature for me to slip back into his mode, but I strive to keep my portrayal authentic and nuanced.
