Brandon Schreur from ComingSoon Senior Editor recently had a chat with Gerard Butler and O’Shea Jackson Jr. about the upcoming movie titled “Den of Thieves 2: Pantera“. During their conversation, they shared their excitement for rejoining forces in the new Den of Thieves sequel, delved into their methods for embodying their characters in specific scenes, and revealed other interesting tidbits.
In the follow-up to the 2018 action-heist movie Den of Thieves, Gerard Butler (Plane, Has Fallen series) and O’Shea Jackson Jr. (Straight Out of Compton, Godzilla: King of the Monsters) reprise their roles. The sequel, titled Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, finds Big Nick (Butler) pursuing Donnie (Jackson) in Europe as he navigates the dangerous and unstable world of diamond thieves and the notorious Panther mafia, who are planning a massive heist at the world’s largest diamond exchange.
Den of Thieves 2: Pantera releases in United States theaters on January 10, 2025.
Brandon Schreur: The interaction between your characters in this film was delightful. Particularly since in the initial movie, there was a significant conflict between you all. In the sequel, it seems more like a give-and-take, but for much of it, it feels like old friends bonding. I found it immensely enjoyable to watch. I’m curious, when you received the script for Den of Thieves 2, did you anticipate the sequel would have this dynamic? Were these elements present in your mind while creating the first film?
Gerard Butler: To be frank, we didn’t initially plan to create a second film. The first one was more like a standalone, fascinating tale. As we progressed in its creation, it became increasingly satisfying. When it was finally released, we realized that we might have crafted a timeless movie filled with memorable moments, an unforgettable plot, and captivating characters.
However, when it became my turn to swiftly move to the opposite side, joining him, I exclaimed, “No man, that’s not the route I prefer – prison or partnership with me.” This idea is intriguing. It leapt; so where do we progress in the next installment? We had numerous directions to explore without going that far, but this path unveiled a whole new dimension that, in my opinion, keeps us guessing about the relationship dynamics, trust, and underlying tensions.
O’Shea Jackson Jr.: Hearing Christian call and explain the situation was incredibly exciting. He told me ‘Big Nick’ would be joining forces with me, which felt like acquiring the top player from a rival team during the off-season – it’s an amazing sensation.
It wasn’t at all how I anticipated it would turn out, but it seems to be exactly where it should be. In this modern era, our spectators are incredibly perceptive, often anticipating the course of events. They tend to expect certain outcomes. This can lead us to follow conventional paths. However, when we manage to open a fresh door to new possibilities, that’s when we can keep them engaged and remind them, ‘Hey, just sit back, relax, and enjoy the journey, see where we’re taking you.’
Absolutely, I concur with your sentiments. The film is not only engaging but also unpredictable, keeping one on the edge of their seat, which I truly appreciate. Gerard, there are certain scenes – or a series of them, to be precise – that I’d love to discuss with you. In these scenes, your character is seen going to a club, using drugs, and dancing exuberantly. It appears he’s having an incredible time, but I suspect it might be challenging for an actor to portray such intensity without the audience realizing it. Could you share some insights into how you manage to convey that level of energy in those moments?
Butler: That day, I acted like I was under the influence of drugs – do you recall that? I simulated being high throughout the entire day. I even told my dialect coach that I had taken a lot of ecstasy beforehand, although I was actually sober. Upon hearing this, she became concerned and said something along the lines of, “Gerry seems to be under the influence of drugs; he’s acting recklessly and is starring in this movie!
You really need to stick with it; it’s tougher than it seems, but as you dedicate yourself more, you’ll find enjoyment in it. And I must say, it was quite enjoyable. The socializing, dancing, and even the impromptu moments were all a blast – those spontaneous instances were particularly fun. However, don’t forget that while everyone else is dancing, they’re also watching you. Though everyone is sober, there’s an underlying sense of observation as they glance at you from the side.
In the mix of somewhat awkward instances, there’s a promising payoff ahead with the final scene. I thoroughly enjoyed it; Jackson Jr.’s performance in that part was delightful. Simply fantastic!
Jackson Jr.:Regarding that particular event, buddy, I’ve attended Coachella in the past. I’m familiar with the vibe. I’ve been there myself. I studied at USC, pal. You can imagine what it’s like.
Thanks to Gerard Butler and O’Shea Jackson Jr. for discussing Den of Thieves 2: Pantera.
