Interstellar Rerelease Date Pushed Back, Destroyed 70mm Prints Rumor Debunked

As a gamer who’s had his fair share of space adventures in various virtual realms, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement about the delayed release of Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar. Despite the initial disappointment of having to wait an extra two months, the prospect of experiencing this cinematic masterpiece on the big screen once more, especially in 70mm Imax, is simply too enticing to ignore.

The Interstellar rerelease has been pushed back to December.

Originally scheduled for a re-release in cinemas to celebrate Interstellar’s tenth anniversary on September 27, 2024, the screening has been moved back by about two months and will now take place on December 6, 2024.

Per Variety, the film will be shown in 70mm Imax prints and on digital screens.

Rumors about the 70mm Interstellar prints being destroyed have been debunked

I’ve been hearing some buzz online about Paramount potentially cancelling the re-release of the movie, but according to my sources chatting with Deadline, those rumors have been put to rest. Apparently, the 70mm prints that were said to be destroyed after the initial release were not the ones needed for the re-release. Phew! I’m relieved to know it’s still happening.

The article states that there’s disagreement regarding a rumor about the destruction of 70mm prints of Interstellar. Paramount asserts they have stored more copies of the film than most other movies. Keep in mind, though, due to the wear and tear films experience while being played on large screens, it’s not unusual for them to become unusable following their initial theater showings.

Under Nolan’s direction, the movie Interstellar premiered in U.S. cinemas in November 2024. It raked in around $705.2 million worldwide, with a production budget estimated to be about $165 million. The film received the Best Visual Effects award at the 87th Academy Awards and was also nominated for four other Oscars.

In this movie, Matthew McConaughey takes on the role of Joseph Cooper, Anne Hathaway plays Amelia Brand, Jessica Chastain is Murph Cooper in her adult years, while Mackenzie Foy portrays young Murph. The characters Donald and John Brand are played by John Lithgow and Michael Caine respectively. Casey Affleck acts as Tom Cooper, with Timothée Chalamet depicting the younger version of this character. Wes Bentley is Doyle, Getty is played by Topher Grace, and TARS has Bill Irwin providing his voice in the film.

The movie’s plotline is set in Earth’s future where a widespread crop disease and another Dust Bowl catastrophe are gradually making the planet inhospitable. Professor Brand, a brilliant NASA physicist, has been devising strategies to rescue humanity by relocating Earth’s inhabitants to a different world through a wormhole. However, before this can happen, Brand recruits former NASA pilot Cooper and a group of researchers to travel through the wormhole, explore the galaxy, and determine which of three potential planets could serve as mankind’s new home.

Interstellar returns to theaters and 70mm Imax on December 6, 2024.
