For almost four years now, Insomniac has given us a sneak peek at Marvel’s Wolverine, but aside from occasional confirmations that the project is underway, we haven’t received any substantial updates. This seems to be a pattern with other major projects like The Elder Scrolls 6 and Grand Theft Auto 6 as well.
The creators of these games attribute their extended production periods to discussions about scale, resources, and quality. However, what this really amounts to is heightened anticipation for the game. With years of waiting, one might wonder if the final product will truly meet such lofty expectations.
Marvel’s Wolverine is joining other games like The Elder Scrolls 6
Back in September 2021, Insomniac Games unveiled the highly anticipated title Marvel’s Wolverine, leaving fans exhilarated with a captivating cinematic teaser. However, since then, there has been scarce new information about the game beyond occasional promises of its progress.
Yesterday itself, Insomniac Games acknowledged through a fan interaction on Twitter that they’ve been actively developing “Marvel’s Wolverine” for the PlayStation 5. They mentioned they would only reveal updates when it’s convenient for them.
We’re diligently developing Marvel’s Wolverine for PS5, but we won’t disclose details about the game until it’s appropriate for us to do so. That will always be our standard approach.

In a similar vein to how Bethesda unveiled The Elder Scrolls 6 in June 2018, offering few specifics, the same can be said for their subsequent updates. These updates from Bethesda have been sparse and somewhat ambiguous at their best.
The issue with these premature unveilings is they frequently lead to failure. For instance, a spectator recently commented that it’s illogical to showcase games when they’re merely concepts instead of fully developed projects. What benefits does this serve—generating excitement? Maintaining such enthusiasm for several years is quite challenging. As we saw with GTA 6, the anticipation only grows as time goes on, but can developers meet those expectations?
It seems puzzling to me why some industries feel compelled to reveal their game concepts when they’re still just ideas. I can’t quite grasp whether they believe this early announcement sparks excitement or not, but personally, the extended period of waiting—often a half decade or more—has the opposite effect on me.

Despite the high expectations built over years due to speculation and shared fan theories, there’s a risk that the game may not meet these lofty standards when it eventually launches. This is because no product can fully live up to the anticipation and hype surrounding it, as what is being marketed is often just an idea or concept at its core. In our view, these studios might be overpromising something that’s still in developmental stages.
It’s an industry-wide issue, just so we’re clear
It’s concerning to note the escalating problem of lengthy production periods for games, with some projects taking anywhere from five to ten years to complete. For instance, Rockstar’s much-anticipated GTA 6 has been in the works since 2014 and may not be released until as late as 2025, totalling over a decade of development. Star Citizen is another example, with work on it having started twelve years ago. So, why are these extended production periods becoming commonplace?
One issue at hand is the tendency for projects to expand beyond their original plans, often referred to as feature creep or scope creep. Game studios are frequently driven towards creating larger, more expansive, and visually stunning games. However, it’s crucial for developers to understand when enough is enough to avoid overdoing it. Let’s not overindulge, shall we? Unwanted features in games have begun to emerge that were never requested by players initially.
That’s where passion for creating a great game meets potential risks. What we really want is a well-crafted, polished game, not necessarily the largest or most visually advanced one. However, the gaming industry’s focus on size and visual spectacle often results in longer development periods, higher costs, and corporate oversight.
Ultimately, it’s possible that both “Marvel’s Wolverine” and “The Elder Scrolls 6” could be incredible. However, at the moment, they seem to be part of a frustrating pattern where games are announced far in advance, but often fail to materialize on schedule.
