The Insidious movie series, known for its chilling horror stories, has been among the most profitable in recent times. The fifth installment, Insidious: The Red Door, debuted in 2023 and did well financially. Yet, Sony Pictures opted to push back the release date of the following chapter, Insidious 6, by almost a year. Instead, they will premiere Darren Aronofsky’s crime thriller titled Caught Stealing, starring Austin Butler, in its stead.
Austin Butler-led Caught Stealing to take Insidious 6’s original release date
On Wednesday, the 29th of January, Sony Pictures revealed that the new launch date for Insidious Chapter 6 is set for August 21, 2026. Instead, Caught Stealing will make its debut on the original release date of the horror feature, which is August 29, 2025.
James Wan initially directed the first Insidious film, which was launched in 2010 and garnered both critical acclaim and financial success. Wan also led the production of the sequel, Insidious: Chapter 2, released in 2013. Despite receiving mostly unfavorable reviews from critics, it maintained the franchise’s commercial success. Leigh Whannell directed Insidious: Chapter 3, which hit theaters in 2015 and had mixed critical reactions but was financially successful. The fourth installment, Insidious: The Last Key, directed by Adam Robitel, continued the box-office trend in 2018, although it received lower ratings than the third film. Patrick Wilson, who has portrayed Josh Lambert across several installments of the series, took charge of the latest chapter.
Back in December 2024, we shared, quoting Jeff Sneider’s sources, that the release date for Insidious 6 had been delayed, but the production was still ongoing. However, as I pen this piece, it remains undisclosed who will direct the film and which actors will be joining its ensemble.
In another version of events, Caught Stealing is a screen adaptation based on Charlie Huston’s Hank Thompson series. It was Huston himself who wrote the script for this film. In the role of Thompson, an ex-baseball player whose best days are over, we see Butler. The story unfolds in the ’90s, where Thompson finds himself unintentionally entangled in the criminal world of downtown New York. Alongside Butler, actors such as Zoë Kravitz, Regina King, Matt Smith, Liev Schreiber, Vincent D’Onofrio, and Bad Bunny make up the rest of the talented cast.
