As a seasoned gamer with years of battling online trolls and toxic communities under my belt, this news hit close to home. It serves as a grim reminder that not every fight is meant to be waged on the digital battlefield.
An influencer was handed a 10-year jail term following her attempt to enlist a duo for a murder-for-hire plot. The victim of her malice? A fellow online personality.
10 years behind bars for murder attempt
Come October 2024, I, a follower of the digital world, found myself witnessing the 35-year-old digital personality, Ashley Grayson, receiving the harshest punishment – a decade behind bars. The reason? She had chosen to hire hitmen who targeted a woman who had dared to publicly criticize her online.
In August 2022, Grayson enticed an old business contact to Dallas, pretending it was for a discussion about a potential business venture. However, instead of offering a partnership, she presented a chilling proposition: $20,000 for each murder committed.
About a month past, Grayson reinforced her plans more strongly. In a video call that was recorded, she left no room for doubt that “immediate action” was required against her competitor, and proposed an extra $5,000 reward if the task was completed within a week’s time. Swift, if nothing else.
The dispute apparently originated from a professional competition that started in 2021, when a competitor based in Mississippi opened an online store, which Grayson thought was overly reminiscent of hers.
In July 2023, Grayson and her spouse appeared in court. Although her spouse was declared not guilty, Grayson herself was convicted. Along with her prison term, she was also mandated to undergo three more years of supervision once her sentence is completed.
A 21st century crime
“The accused attempted to contract somebody to kill a woman due to issues that transpired solely online,” Fondren explained.
Fortunately, the plan was stopped before it led to any fatalities. Regrettably, the emotional impact on the victims and their loved ones was substantial. Fondren commended the swift action of law enforcement: “The quick response by the investigating agencies and our prosecutors prevented a more serious crime from taking place.
It appears the internet is no longer merely a venue for trivial arguments. At times, it transforms into a setting for disagreements that ought to have remained in the offline world.
