There’s a lot of commotion going on in the r/InfinityNikki community: One moderator exhibited behavior that was disrespectful towards LGBTQ+ individuals, leading to their termination following user-led demonstrations for change.
Kissing Is NSFW?
As a gamer, I’ve been enjoying the thrill of Infinity Nikki, this fantastic free-to-play action-adventure game. What makes it even more appealing is its unique photo feature that allows me to create and customize my own images. Since the game occasionally shows these pictures to different players at random, I can’t help but share my favorite snaps in the Infinity Nikki subreddit, a place where they can be admired by a wider audience.
This collection features breathtaking images, amusing comments, and poses…as well as romantic snapshots. However, some users have noticed an inconsistency in the moderation of this subreddit – a moderator has been requesting explicit labeling (NSFW) for photos showing characters kissing or embracing, but only for pictures portraying two females, not for those featuring mixed genders.
Uproar Among Users
Due to the tolerant nature of the /r/InfinityNikki community, a request from the moderator for lesbian content to be labeled as adult material has incited protests. Following the initial post discussing this observation, the subreddit was inundated with expressions of support for LGBTQ+ relationships.
Here’s what users had to say:
Women kissing is not NSFW. Gay people are not inappropriate. – u/vultureskins
If you check that mods comment history they only appear to be coming for the WLW [= women loving women] posts. Kinda hard to argue that it doesn’t come across as homophobic at that point. This mod needs to be removed immediately. – u/magicalpancakes
Hey other mods, serious question can we vote to remove a mod?! I seriously dont feel safe having this sub moderated by a homophobe! This is supposed to be a fun and wholesome community and yet all the hate is coming from a person with total control. Really makes me want to just create a new subreddit if you allow this person to continue moderating. – u/CyanSedusa
Other Moderators’ Responses
In response to accusations of homophobia against user u/SuperCreamPuffs, there has been no response thus far. However, other moderators have taken steps to address the situation. One user shared a conversation they had with a mod, who confirmed that u/SuperCreamPuffs appeared to be singling out LGBTQ+ posts. This mod also expressed disagreement with the “NSFW” tag demands and is currently investigating the issue further.
Later, a moderator posted the following statement:
I just woke up from sleep and it seems there’s an issue with NSFW photos? I’ve never marked Nikki/Nikki/male npc kissing photos as NSFW, the only posts that should get marked as NSFW are suggestive ones. Kissing is something that happens in every type of media including ones for children so it would not be NSFW. The mod has been removed and the NSFW rule has been updated to state the obvious. – u/anestefi
Apart from no longer being a moderator (u/SuperCreamPuffs), their comments advocating for 18+ tags have since been erased by other moderators as well.
What are your thoughts on this matter? Was the action of the moderators quick enough? Should they have conducted more extensive background checks or interviews prior to hiring new moderators initially?
