In response to the requirements set by payment processors, Itch.io, a popular platform for independent games, is now eliminating large quantities of adult content from its online marketplace, mirroring the actions taken by Valve’s Steam storefront.
Itch.io has informed its users that they are removing all mature content (games and literature) from their downloadable library, as well as de-listing such content, in response to recent pressure from their payment processors. This action comes after the platform received increased attention or scrutiny.
The storefront clarified that the ongoing issue centers around a previously banned game known as “No Mercy,” a graphic visual novel that depicted questionable acts without consent.
A game called ‘No Mercy’ was temporarily offered on itch.io but later banned in April. As a result, the organization Collective Shout started a campaign against Steam and itch.io, expressing their concerns about specific content on these platforms to their payment processors.” This is how Itch explained its stance.
Itch clarified that yielding to the requests from payment partners and taking prompt actions towards compliance was a move aimed at assisting the numerous creators on the marketplace who do not produce adult-themed games. Failing to comply could potentially prevent these creators from receiving payments.
The current situation calls for immediate action regarding itch.io’s platform. The circumstances evolved swiftly, necessitating an urgent response to safeguard our primary payment system infrastructure. Regrettably, we were unable to alert creators in advance about this modification. We understand that this sudden change is not optimal and we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused.
The most significant issue with Itch’s deletion of adult content lies in its retroactive elimination of purchases from users’ accounts. Games tagged as questionable won’t just be taken away from new clients, but also long-time ones. Although some NSFW content will reappear over the next few months, games that are entirely removed will no longer be downloadable.
Right now, Itch is thoroughly examining all our content to make sure it aligns with our payment processors’ rules. During this review period, some pages may not be searchable. Once we finish our assessment, we’ll implement new regulations to maintain compliance. For adult-themed pages, there will be an additional step where creators must verify that their content complies with the policies of the payment processors associated with their account.
