As a voracious reader who’s been through countless tales of love and intrigue, I must say that Colby Wilkens’ “If I Stopped Haunting You” left quite an impression. This spooky romance isn’t your typical run-of-the-mill love story; it’s a rollercoaster ride of hauntings, heated arguments, and hidden secrets that kept me hooked from the very first page.
In terms of ghostly love stories, numerous concepts spring to mind, making it challenging to categorize the novel “If I Stopped Haunting You” by Colby Wilkens under a single genre.
Though this book incorporates a number of eerie aspects, it also revolves around a central romantic theme. Therefore, labeling it as a “spooky romance” seems fitting, given the originality that the author infuses into the narrative.
To begin with, I should mention that if you prefer likable characters, you might want to pass on this book. Unlike the typical charming heroines we’re accustomed to, Penelope Skinner is rather unconventional in her character.
Despite my initial hesitations, I chose to delve into it, and to my delight, it surpassed my expectations! A heartfelt thanks to St. Martin’s Press for granting me the opportunity to read this ahead of its release by sending me an ARC.
If I Stopped Haunting You takes spooky to another level.
In this book, we find a distinct gathering featuring Penelope Skinner, an indigenous writer, alongside Neil Storm on a panel. Despite Penelope’s efforts to make her book prosperous, it falls short compared to Neil’s in popularity. This disparity leads to a heated dispute between the two during their panel discussion, culminating in Peneloppe hurling a book at Neil.
After that point, her life takes a downward turn as she struggles to find inspiration and hasn’t produced any work since. However, things begin to shift when her friend extends an invitation for a writing retreat at a mysterious castle, and who else is going? None other than Neil Storm. Initially, they can’t stand each other, but over time, their feelings evolve into mutual attraction.
Penelope, given her past experiences, is naturally cautious, yet there’s more to it. The place they’re lodging in, a castle, has a reputation for being haunted. Uniquely, only Penelope and Neil can perceive this spectral presence. As they navigate their emotions and creative endeavors, they also find themselves puzzling over the enigmatic lady of the manor and the strange happenings within the castle walls.
As the tale progresses, we uncover intriguing details about Neil and Penelope’s literary paths, personal experiences, and the mysterious ghost who persists in haunting the castle. Though events may seem grim at times, Colby Wilkens skillfully ties up all loose ends, resulting in a captivating narrative that carries a hint of self-referentiality. By the story’s conclusion, everything becomes crystal clear.
In a slightly rephrased manner:
If I Stopped Haunting You by Colby Wilkens is out now where books are sold.
