If a Blue Bloods spin-off happens it won't be about Danny Reagan, here's why!

As a devoted fan of Blue Bloods, I’m holding onto the slim hope that we’ll get a spin-off of this beloved drama, even if it means saying goodbye to one Reagan. The show has been a ratings powerhouse for CBS, and both the cast and crew have expressed their desire to continue. However, with the announcement that season 14 will be its last, fans are left craving more from the NYPD family.

Supporters of the popular TV show “Blue Bloods” are eagerly anticipating a potential spin-off, yet it seems that the Reagan family might not be the focus this time around. Let me explain why.

Supporters of “Blue Bloods,” the long-standing CBS drama, are displeased that the show will conclude with the second part of season 14 this autumn. Despite its continued ratings success and the expressed desires of both the cast and crew for more episodes, CBS has decided to call it quits. However, history shows that CBS could change their mind and save a canceled series, especially given the strong viewership numbers.

Regrettably, it seems that “Blue Bloods” is coming to an end after 14 seasons. Yet, devoted fans remain hopeful for a possible spin-off, holding onto the slim chance that CBS might introduce one. Surprisingly, throughout its long run, CBS has never attempted a “backdoor pilot” – an episode designed as a standalone story that could potentially serve as a launchpad for a new series set within the NYPD, the courts, or fire departments, among other possibilities. There are numerous characters with potential to carry such a show, with the Reagan family being a notable example.

Danny, portrayed by Donnie Wahlberg, is the eldest son and leading detective on the show. His character has been heavily emphasized due to his family background as a cop and dealing with the loss of his spouse, Linda. A separate series centered around Danny could be an intriguing option, potentially involving him relocating to a different city to distance himself from the other Reagan family members, which might help reduce casting expenses.

As it turns out, fans just may have gotten that spin-off, only for someone at CBS to say no.

Why a Blue Bloods spin-off about Danny Reagan was nixed

In a lengthy conversation with Deadline, CBS Studios President David Stapf discussed numerous projects and addressed the topic of “Blue Bloods.” He mentioned that there have been proposals for spin-offs featuring Danny, but these ideas were rejected as they are working on finding an appropriate method to broaden this universe.

We don’t have anything that’s going to be in development soon but it’s a brand, a title and a show that is beloved. We’ve got to get it right so we’re taking our time and trying to figure it out, okay, what is the next iteration of Blue Bloods? We have a whole season to go where we intend to celebrate it all season long as to how good that show is, so there’s still time for us to figure that out.

The producers are prioritizing finishing the series over planning for potential spin-offs. At the same time, they remain optimistic that CBS may change its mind and grant another season. If the final episodes introduce elements suitable for a spin-off, it could be an effective way to preserve Blue Bloods’ enduring legacy.

A show focusing solely on Danny may not progress well as he is deeply connected to his family, making it implausible for the other Reagan characters to be absent. Consider developing a spin-off around a character with ties to the original series who doesn’t have as strong a commitment to the main cast.

I’m eagerly anticipating the final chapters of “Blue Bloods” as we currently have several months left until its series conclusion. The prospect of new episodes outweighs any thoughts of a spin-off for me at this time.

Blue Bloods season 14B will air Fridays at 10/9c this fall on CBS.
