Iconic Halo voice actor has been “waiting” to record Halo audiobooks, but 343 never asked

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia and anticipation when it comes to Jeff Steitzer, the voice of God in Halo multiplayer. His iconic lines have been etched into my memory, his voice synonymous with some of the most exhilarating moments in gaming history.

The Voice of God in Halo multiplayer, Jeff Steitzer, has spent more than two decades providing the series with one of the most iconic voices in video game history. As the series has branched off into books, comics, TV shows and even movies, Steitzer has been waiting for Halo Studios to give him a chance at just one thing: audiobooks.

During a conversation on the VideoGamer Podcast, Steitzer disclosed that he’s never had an opportunity to narrate an audiobook for the Halo franchise. Although books in the series have been expertly read by gifted actors—among them Keith Szarabajka for Halo: Epitaph—Steitzer has yet to be offered a chance to contribute to the audiobooks within the franchise’s extended universe.

In his recent podcast appearance, Steitzer shared that he’s been eagerly anticipating the opportunity to narrate an audiobook for the series. With no insights into any upcoming Halo projects, this seasoned voice actor and stage performer expresses his enthusiasm for contributing to the broader Halo universe.

Steitzer expressed that he’s been anticipating a call from them. He’s eager, prepared, and ready to voice the Halo audiobooks. Strangely, they haven’t reached out yet, and he’s unsure of the reason behind it.

“They keep me in a closet, they let me out every three years, I do a recording, they send me back.

HALO VOICE ACTOR JEFF STEITZER

With the newly-rebranded Halo Studios even releasing smaller audio dramas on their YouTube channel, Steitzer joked that the Halo developer’s keep him on a “need to know basis”.

The actor admitted that he wasn’t aware of the YouTube channel. He said it’s like he’s kept in a storage room and only brought out every three years to make recordings, with no idea about current events. He found it bizarre.

During the interview, Steitzer shared his astonishment at not being invited back for a cameo appearance in the form of an Easter egg in the Halo television series. Despite the fact that the initial season made a reference to the Halo-inspired web series Red vs Blue, Steitzer was regrettably overlooked.

The actor playfully remarked, “If Whoopi Goldberg can manage a cantina, why shouldn’t I try too?” He humorously imagined Master Chief, looking downcast and saying something like, ‘I’ve misplaced my uniform,’ to which the actor would respond, ‘Go out there and conclude the battle,’ even though nobody sought his advice.

Although Steitzer’s role as the Halo multiplayer announcer might not be as prominent as Steve Downes’ Master Chief, his voice lines like “double kill” and countless others have probably been played billions of times more. Over the last few years, with games trying to include other announcers in their multiplayer modes, fans have consistently demanded appreciation for Steitzer’s voice. It would be fantastic if he could narrate future Halo books.

In the wake of Halo Infinite’s release, the Halo extended universe is expected to carry on with additional novels like Empty Throne (due in February). Fingers crossed, Steitzer might get the opportunity to lend his voice to more content within the series in the future.
